South Korea Rips Greece To Open World Cup Play
South Korea Rips Greece To Open World Cup PlayThe 2002 World Cup was highlighted by South Korea’s memorable run to the semifinals, defeating European powers Portugal, Spain and Italy along the way. They’ve still got a ways to go to improve upon that performance, but they got the 2010 tournament off to a great start on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over a listless Greece side. Lee Jung-Soo and Park Ji-Sung both scored as South Korea took an early advantage in Group B play.

Soccer betting odds were fairly even for the contest, with South Korea’s backers receiving a +180 payday with the victory. Greece had been installed as a short +155 favorite in the match with the draw set at +200. This was only Greece’s second World Cup appearance, and for most of the game they looked like they were in over their head and like they didn’t belong in the meeting of soccer’s best. Greece has now conceded 12 goals in four World Cup matches, and their overall save percentage of 40% is the lowest of the 56 teams that have appeared in the competition.

In Greece’s last appearance in the World Cup back in 1992 they let mighty Argentina score just two minutes into the game. They showed some improvement this time around, but not much—South Korea struck just seven minutes into the game when Lee Jung-Soo curled in a nifty free kick. Manchester United’s Park Ji-Sung capped the scoring with an impressive solo effort just after halftime to produce the final 2-0 margin.

Though happy with the victory, South Korean coach Huh Jung-moo suggested that they could have scored more goals:

"If we had been a little bit calmer, we could have had an even better result. In terms of scoring goals, it could have been a little bit better for us."

"We said we shouldn't sit on our laurels and we should attack. I said at halftime that we would have more opportunities and we should take advantage."

Greek coach Otto Rehhagel didn’t mince words in his assessment of the team’s performance:

"We really have to get our act together. We've got to improve a couple of things and be brave and courageous enough."

Greece will have their last, best shot at getting their first win in World Cup play on Saturday when they play Nigeria. South Korea will face a much tougher test, taking on an Argentina team that is considered among the favorites to win the entire competition.
