| USA Opens 2nd Round World Cup Play Against Ghana |
The US team is nothing if not resilient. They were down 2-0 in the second half against Serbia and it looked like their World Cup would end in disappointment once again. Thanks to a furious comeback they salvaged a draw—and actually deserved the victory were it not for a now infamous blown call by the referee that negated a potential game winning goal. They displayed even more resilience in their final group game against Algeria and scrapped for a victory on Landon Donovan’s goal in stoppage time—set up by a brilliant throw in from keeper Tim Howard. While things in the US clubhouse are peaceful, the same can’t be said for Ghana. Sulley Muntari had been rumored to have been a ‘disruptive influence’ in the lead up to the World Cup and coach Milovan Rajevac wanted to kick him off the squad following what has been described as ‘a foul mouthed rant’ against the coaching staff following the team’s 1-1 draw against Australia. For now, the Inter Milan midfielder is out of the doghouse following intervention by team captain Stephen Appiah and Ghana FA president Kwasi Nyantakyi who lobbied Rajevac on Muntari’s behalf. He’s reportedly apologized, and the Ghana FA released a statement which implied that peace has been restored. Publically, Rajevac and Muntari have said they’re putting their differences aside ‘for the good of the team’. Something that previous editions of the US team have lacked is confidence and swagger, and they’ve shown a marked improvement in both areas during this World Cup run. In theory, the US defense remains suspect but the considerable skills of goalkeeper Tim Howard help cover many of these miscues. Despite the drama of Donovan’s goal, the US were unfortunate to not get several more—they generated 22 shots in the game including 10 on goal. In a relatively even game we see a lot more upside with the US and look for them to get past Ghana in a relatively high scoring game that should go OVER the total.

Following an amazing stoppage time goal by Landon Donovan against Algeria, the USA has advanced to the knockout round and with a very favorable bracket seeding could make a nice run. Ghana is through to the second round for the second straight World Cup despite a 1-0 setback to Germany on Wednesday. Saturday’s game will take place at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenberg, South Africa with the winner facing the winner between South Korea and Uruguay in the quarterfinals.
