Spain Faces Germany With World Cup Final Berth At Stakes

Heavyweights Lesnar And Carwin Face Off At UFC 116With all due respect to Uruguay and Holland, who play in Tuesday’s earlier semifinal game there’s a certain vibe that the matchup between Spain and Germany will determine the eventual World Cup champion. The European powers both kept a clean sheet in beating their quarterfinal opponents, but in a dramatically divergent manner. Spain had all they could handle with a tenacious Paraguay side, finally wresting victory with David Villa’s goal in the 83rd minute. Germany, on the other hand, absolutely overwhelmed Argentina en route to a 4-0 win. Thomas Mueller scored just three minutes in to give Germany a 1-0 lead at the half, and they poured it on in the second half as Miroslav Klose scored twice.

Spain was the pre-tournament wagering favorite (along with Brazil), though Germany was something of an afterthought in futures wagering. The Germans were available before the World Cup at a price of +1450 which now seems unfathomable given their solid performance throughout. Oddly, Spain was the tournament favorite despite having never made it past the semifinal round—and the last time they reached this point was back in 1950. They’re certainly not content with just matching the performance of that team, and definitely have the talent to win soccer’s ultimate prize.

On the downside, Spain hasn’t exactly been dominant in the 2010 World Cup. You can make a good case that they’ve done just enough to get by and while that may have worked to get them this far it’s unlikely that it will be enough to stop Germany. Spain was shocked by Switzerland in their opening game, but recovered to beat Honduras and Chile and advance out of the group stage. They then beat Portugal and Paraguay by identical 1-0 margins to advance to the semifinals.

Germany looked almost unbeatable as they opened World Cup play with a 4-0 win over Australia, but they also fell victim to the upset bug losing to Serbia in their second match. They edged Ghana 1-0 to close out group play and appear to be hitting their stride at the right time. Both of their knockout stage games have been routs, 4-1 over England and 4-0 over Argentina.

Although this game has been priced as a ‘pick’em’, it’s hard not to be impressed with Germany’s current form. There was some concern about their goaltending and backline play prior to the tournament, but it’s been very solid. On offense, Germany has received balanced scoring with Miroslav Klose and Thomas Mueller scoring four goals each and Lukas Podolski contributing two. That’s a marked contrast to Spain’s offense, which aside from David Villa—who has scored five of his team’s six goals—has been almost nonexistent.

Ultimately, Germany looks to be playing their best soccer at the right time and is a team with too much offensive balance for the Spaniards to counter. We’ll look for Germany to take care of business and win this game within 90 minutes with both teams scoring enough to send the final score OVER the total.
