Mourinho is nothing if not a fascinating individual. He’s egotistical, self absorbed, controversial and has a track record of contentious relationships with team management across the globe that makes the infamous Billy Martin/George Steinbrenner relationship seem mild by comparison. On the other hand, he very well may be the best soccer mind on the planet and was instrumental in transforming FC Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan into powerhouses. He’ll start his first season at Real Madrid in late August, but said that after his run in the Spanish La Liga is through that America is a viable option: “When [my kids] are older, it is time for a different time in my professional life and my personal life, too. So who knows? This is a great place for me. I came here with Chelsea, with Inter Milan and now with Real Madrid.” “I love L.A. I love to work here. Who knows, [maybe] my future will be around in a different environment.” Mourinho was in Los Angeles with Real Madrid to play an exhibition game against the MLS LA Galaxy. Galaxy president Bob Payne said that he was surprised when he was approached for the game, and particularly Mourinho’s fondness with ‘The City of Angels’: “We hadn’t heard from them until he joined and we think they had other plans. It seems very much that it was his thing, his idea, his plan. He loves it here, he has been here before, and he sees it as the perfect place and the perfect way to prepare his team. Of course we were very happy and excited about that.” Real Madrid will begin their Spanish league season at Mallorca on August 29th, with Mourinho making his debut at the Santiago Bernabéu against Osasuna the following week. They’re expected to give Barcelona a tough fight for the league crown this season, though soccer betting futures have Real installed as a slight underdog to the defending champions.

Jose Mourinho has yet to coach his first game for Real Madrid, yet he’s already been discussing his next job. Mourinho recently suggested in an interview with the American media that he’d be interested in leading the US National Soccer team. At the time of the interview, Bob Bradley was still firmly entrenched as US team coach but despite recent news that he’s possibly in line for the managerial job at Aston Villa obviously Mourinho isn’t looking to make the move now. Still, the ‘Special One’ made clear that the idea of winding up his career in America was very enticing.
