| Donetsk vs. Roma |
FC Shakhtar Donetsk is enjoying a long unbeaten home run in Europe and will be relying on that form to carry them past AS Roma and into the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the first time. The Ukrainian side is further intensified by their 3-2 first-leg win in Italy, rallying from 1-0 down to take control of the tie thanks to first-half goals from Jadson, Douglas Costa and Luiz Adriano. Roma will have a new coach for the second leg after the club's former Italian international striker Vincenzo Montella took the reins following Claudio Ranieri's resignation on 21 February. Despite finding himself on the losing side after conceding three goals at home in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg, defender Nicolás Burdisso insists AS Roma can overturn their 3-2 disadvantage against FC Shakhtar Donetsk. It was a night that started so well for the Giallorossi when Răzvan Raţ's own goal gave them the lead after 28 minutes. Indeed that goal might have made it 2-0 had Burdisso himself not missed a free header seven minutes earlier; instead Roma then conceded three in a horrendous 12-minute spell that meant the hosts were booed off the pitch at half-time. Jérémy Menez's second-half strike gave Roma hope, however – and Burdisso belief in a comeback in the return on 8 March. The Ukrainian side came from a goal down to take a firm grip on the tie and move within sight of a place in the quarter-finals for the first time. Roma were now playing with more confidence but as they pushed forward laid themselves open to the counter-punch. Twice Doni denied Luiz Adriano with lunging tackles more in keeping with a full-back, while Henrik Mkhitaryan's drive fizzed just wide. The introduction of Marco Borriello gave the home attack more impetus, the Italian international threatening with a header and shot in the last ten minutes. Paolo Castellini, Totti and De Rossi also forced Pyatov into late action but the Pitmen held on for a famous victory. When the teams met in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League group stage, Shakhtar won 1-0 at home thanks to Ciprian Marica's 61st-minute goal. Roma were 4-0 victors in Italy, Rodrigo Taddei, Francesco Totti, Daniele De Rossi and David Pizarro all scoring in the final 24 minutes. Although it looks bleak being on the road against Donetsk with their home field and home crowd advantage, perhaps Roma can pull it together with enough moxie to finally have a come from behind win and move on the quarter finals of this match. It’s been a long time for fans and Italy will surely be pulling for their team to do what hasn’t been done in years while hoping the players can keep the penalties down while implementing the plays as best they can.
