Manchester vs. Marseille
Manchester vs. MarseilleUEFA Champions League Round of 16, Manchester vs. Marseille, second leg will be played 03/15/2011 at 20:45CET (19:45 local time) in Old Trafford, Manchester, England. Manchester United FC have never lost to a League 1 opposition at Old Trafford and will look to uphold that record as their last-16 tie against Olympique de Marseille concludes after a goalless first leg.

Marseille have won only once previously in England, Mathieu Valbuena scoring the only goal in a 1-0 success at Liverpool FC in the 2007/08 group stage. Their overall record is W1 D3 L5.

The clubs met in the 1999/2000 first group stage, United winning 2-1 at home after Andrew Cole (78) and Paul Scholes (82) overturned Ibrahima Bakayoko's opener. William Gallas (69) hit the only goal of the return but United still topped the group with Rolland Courbis' OM second.

Olympique de Marseille failed to find a way through Manchester United FC's resolute defence as two former UEFA Champions League winners cancelled each other out in a tactical contest in southern France.

With both teams missing key men through injury, this eagerly-anticipated contest struggled to live up to the pre-match hype, although there were positives for both sides ahead of the second leg at Old Trafford on 15 March. Despite the absence of striker André-Pierre Gignac, Marseille posed frequent problems through their lively wingers André Ayew and Loïc Rémy yet rarely tested Edwin van der Sar. Sir Alex Ferguson, meanwhile, will have been pleased with the way Chris Smalling performed in the absence of Rio Ferdinand, the young defender impressively neutralizing the threat of Brandão.

Competing in a UEFA Champions League knockout tie for the first time since 1993, the year they won the trophy, the Ligue 1 titleholders were quickly on the attack, Ayew surging down the left inside the first minute and crossing for Rémy who shot wildly into the stands. Yet the visitors, who had won nine of their last ten European away games, soon steadied the ship and began posing a threat of their own through Nani.

Olympique de Marseille coach Didier Deschamps said a goalless draw with Manchester United FC was "not a bad result" after his side shut out the English team at Stade Vélodrome.

OM were chasing a fifth straight win in this season's competition, having beaten another English side Chelsea FC in their last outing, and they began asking more serious questions of United in the second period. They may be allies in war, but not in soccer, the English look to demolish the French on the Ides of March to move on to the quarter finals.
