Women’s World Cup: North Korea vs. Colombia
Women’s World Cup: North Korea vs. ColombiaThe North Korea vs. Colombia World Cup soccer match will be fascinating to watch. Right now these teams have one thing in common in the fact that the both loss to the United States.

Colombia were the surprise runners-up in the Conmebol section after finishing second in their group to Brazil, winning three of their four matches. In the final round, despite losing 5-0 to Brazil, the win over Argentina and a draw with Chile were enough to see them through to the finals.

Seventeen-year-old midfielder Yorely Rincon scored five goals in the qualifiers. Other important players include goalkeeper Paula Forero and defender Nathalie Arias. Coach is Ricardo Rozo and this is Colombia’s first appearance in the final stages.

It took a penalty shoot-out for Australia to beat North Korea in the AFC final but both teams knew they were already through to the finals, though North Korea needed extra time to beat China 1-0 in the semi-finals. Among the stars in the team is midfielder Jo Yum-Mi.

The coach is Kim Kwang Min, who took over in 2005. This will be team’s fourth appearance in the final stages, the best achievement so far being the quarter finals in 2007.

For as good as both teams may have seen they have some problems of late, especially North Korea who has a good excuse for losing to the United States.

Managers often use a post-match press conference to defend their team's failings. But Arsene Wenger's classic 'I did not see it' has been taken to new levels by Kwang Min Kim, boss of the North Korean women.

Following his side's 2-0 defeat to the USA in the opening rubber of their World Cup campaign in Germany, Kim blamed the disappointing display on his players getting struck by lightning.

He claimed some of them were hospitalized with electrocution after a training match almost three weeks earlier.

When we stayed in Pyongyang during training our players were hit by lightning, and more than five of them were hospitalised,' said coach Kim.

'Some stayed in hospital and then came to Germany later than the rest of us. The goalkeeper and the four defenders were most affected, and some midfielders as well. The physicians said the players were not capable of participating in the tournament.

'But World Cup football is the most important and significant event for a footballer, so they don’t want to think about anything but football.

Now the team may have to come up with another “excuse” because Colombia can play with this team and will be worth a small wager with the tempting odds.
