Copa America Preview: Colombia vs. Peru
Copa America Preview: Colombia vs. PeruCopa America continues this weekend with the potential for another classic battle between Colombia vs. Peru.

As we bid goodbye to Costa Rica, Ecuador, Bolivia and Mexico, all eyes turn to the remaining South American sides sharpening their studs for the quarterfinals Stage of the Copa America 2011.

First up on Saturday we have Colombia vs. Peru in what should be a cracking match with plenty to bet on. Colombia are the out and out favorites to win this match as they topped their group (Group A) with two wins and no defeats, clocking up three goals and not conceding a single one!

Peru by comparison, only made it to the quarterfinals through the back door. Despite finishing in third place in their group (Group C) with four points (one win, one draw and one loss) giving them four points (just one behind second place Uruguay) they progress because of the Copa America rule that states, the two best third-placed teams also advanced to the quarterfinals. In the “Third Place Table” Peru sat at the top, a tidy point above Paraguay (who also progress and face Brazil in Sunday’s Quarter Final).

Colombia seemed to be the only “proper” team in the Copa who weren’t caught napping. Their first match was a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica, their second a 0-0 draw against a misfiring Argentina and finally they turned on the class against Bolivia (who had also lost 2-0 to Costa Rica) winning with a pair of goals from Radamel Falcao García Zárate, the second of which was a penalty. Check out the soccer odds on him adding to his tally against Peru.

Peru have already let in as many goals as they have scored (two). In Peru’s last game they faced Chile, and despite a worthy performance they were on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline.

The final score was a blessing for Chile as they now avoid Argentina in their quarterfinal (significant as Argentina now seem to have found their form). It was a cruel blow to Peru, and only the hardest of cold hearts would begrudge them their place in the quarterfinals after they seemed to be on for a worthy 0-0 draw which would have given the table a very different complexion. Had the game ended tied, Group C would have seen Chile, Uruguay and Peru all tied on five points, all tied on a +1 goal difference. As it was, an own goal deep into injury time “scored” by Peru’s Aldo Corzo undid what had been a remarkably courageous defence for the team.

The simple betting odds are on Colombia winning, most sportsbooks have them at 8/13, while a draws is at 5/2 and a Peru win is an outside bet at 9/2. While it’s a brave handicapper who will bet against Colombia you really shouldn’t totally discount Peru. Against Chile, Peru posed a danger on the counterattack with Aldo Corzo consistently challenging down the right wing yet their final ball continued to let the Peruvians down.

You’ll need steady nerves if you want to bet on Colombia’s tournament clean sheet remaining spotless.

The biggest odds out there, and will bring home the beer money (for quite a while) if it comes off, is Peru winning both halves, at +2500 (maybe worth a ten spot). To put things into perspective, Colombia winning both halves is at a lot more likely +333. Victor Chandler reckons Colombia will romp it, they have them winning at -162, while they have Peru winning at +500. There’s a few more tasty bets out there in the soccer lines that I’d recommend having a dabble with (or even an accumulator on) Colombia scoring in both halves at +16, Colombia winning both halves at +150 and dare I say an early bet on Colombia winning the tournament…?

Copa America Preview: Columbia comes up with a big win this round and will defeat Peru 2-0.
