CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Quarter Finals Wednesday
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Quarter Finals WednesdayArsenal vs. Barcelona

Inter vs. CSKA Moskva

On Wednesday evening, FC Barcelona will visit Arsenal FC for their quarter-final first leg in a repeat of the 2006 UEFA Champions League final.

In this most anticipated duel, Thierry Henry, who set new scoring records during eight years at Arsenal, will face his old club for the first time.

However, defending champion Barcelona is counting on Lionel Messi’s exploits to set the tone against Arsenal. Messi missed the 2006 final through injury but has been in phenomenal form for the Blaugrana, scoring two goals in the 4-0 rout of Stuttgart between a pair of Liga hat-tricks.

Arsenal, too, are hitting form at clutch time. After knocking five past FC Porto in their round of 16 second leg, the London team is the competition’s top scorer with 17 goals. Captain Cesc Fàbregas will look to be at his best against Barcelona, the club with whom he began his career.

Fàbregas and Messi played together at youth level, and who makes the greater impact in those contests on March 31 and April 6 could determine which club advances to the semis.

Arsenal will look to maintain their impressive streak of five straight home victories in the Champions League this season, while the title holders are undefeated on their away games with one win and three draws. Barcelona’s last defeat in the competition, qualifiers excluded, was in the 2007/08 semi-final at Manchester United FC.

While Arsenal are chasing a third semi-final appearance, Barcelona is bidding for their 11th. Barcelona most recent meeting with a Premier League team was last year’s Rome final when they defeated Manchester United 2-0. They have won eight and lost nine of 17 previous two-legged meetings with English teams.

FC Internazionale Milano have not reached the Champions League semi-finals since 2003, and they are confident they can get one step closer of the final four against CSKA Moskva who are in uncharted territory.

Inter is unbeaten at home both in the Champions League and in Serie A this season, and they notched an impressive victory defeating Chelsea FC in the round of 16. CSKA, though, is not to be taken lightly. The Moscow club got some great results on the road on their way to the quarter-finals.

In the 2007/08 campaign Inter came on top when the clubs met in the group stage. The Italian team won 2-1 in Moscow in Oct. 2007, after trailing 1-0 at the half, and produced an even more spectacular comeback in Milan when they overcame a 2 goals deficit with doubles strikes from Esteban Cambiasso and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

European champions twice in the 1960s, Inter are seeking their first semi-final appearance since they lost to neighbours AC Milan in 2003. They lost twice since at the quarter-final stage, in 2005 and 2006.

UEFA Cup champions in 2005, CSKA are trying to become the first Russian club to reach the Champions League semi-finals since FC Spartak Moskva in 1991. Since losing at VfL Wolfsburg on Matchday 1, CSKA have held Manchester United FC 3-3 and won at Besiktas and Sevilla FC. The 2-1 success in Sevilla secured a 3-2 aggregate victory against the Spanish club in the first knockout round.

An interesting matchup, the Nerazzurri should come on top in this contest. The club from Milano is hungry for a shot at the Champions league title. Will this be the year?
