Man U Superstar Rooney Out Two To Four Weeks With Ankle Injury
Man U Superstar Rooney Out Two To Four Weeks With Ankle InjuryWhen Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney had to be helped from the field following his team’s Champions League loss to Bayern Munich earlier this week, an entire nation feared the worst.

Not only is Rooney a crucial component of Man U’s quest for a Premiership title, he’s also expected to be the offensive catalyst for England’s World Cup campaign. On Friday morning, the club released a very positive prognosis—Rooney had not suffered a fracture but only minor ligament damage to his right ankle. He’s expected to be out of action two to four weeks, which will keep him out of some crucial Premier League and Champions League play but he’s expect to be fully recovered by the time World Cup play begins.

Rooney injured his ankle during stoppage time against Bayern Munich in Germany on Tuesday. As he lay on the pitch clutching his ankle, the home team scored the winning goal. Rooney was seen limping from the Allianz Arena wearing a protective boot, and with Man U officials tight lipped about his condition there was great concern among English soccer fans. Rooney has scored a total of 34 goals in all competitions this year, and is considered among the most dangerous offensive threats in the sport.

Manchester United team manager Sir Alex Ferguson spoke Friday morning, and he seemed amused at the prospect of having to deliver some sort of message to assuage the fears of the soccer mad nation as if he were a modern day Winston Churchill:

"(There is) no bone damage or serious ligament damage. The nation can stop praying."

"It was panic. We are relieved. When we saw him hobble off, you are hoping when you send him for a scan, you get some good news and it could have been worse given the way he hobbled off.

"But it's out of the way, we can put it to one side and get on with our job on the pitch."

Ferguson continued, speaking of his plans for the offense in Rooney’s absence:

"John O'Shea and Owen Hargreaves have trained very well with the first team. They are not far away and I may use one of them as substitute tomorrow [Saturday] and the other on Wednesday.

"John O'Shea in particular has done a lot of work. The boy has come on terrifically well in the last two or three weeks. If I include one tomorrow and one on Wednesday it will give them the confidence that they are back. That is what they need.''

Man U faces a pair of crucial games in the coming week. On Saturday, they’ll host Chelsea in a match that could go a long way toward determining the Premiership champions. Currently, Manchester United is in first place by a single point over their longtime rivals. Tuesday they’ll host Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal matchup.
