Bordeaux fell behind ten minutes into the first leg on a strike from Lisandro, but they pulled even four minutes later on a header by Marouane Chamakh. Michel Bastos restored the home team’s advantage in the 32nd minute, and Lisandro made it 3-1 from the penalty spot 13 minutes from time after Matthieu Chalmé had handed Aly Cissokho’s shot. Whatever the outcome, France is guaranteed its first UEFA Champions league semi-finalist since AS Monaco FC in 2004. Bordeaux beat Lyon 1-0 in the club’s last Ligue 1 encounter on April 19 last year, and the overall record between those two teams in the French top division could hardly be closer: Bordeaux have 32 wins and Lyon 31 with 26 draws. However, a victory for the Girondins might not be enough in this case unless they manage to cover the two-goal deficit. A tough task for the home team this Wednesday. Despite the two-goal advantage, Lyon coach Claude Puel in insists that the second leg of their QF tie remains uncertain: “For the second leg we’re without Lisandro, who was huge for us tonight. It’s open.” Bordeaux coach Laurent Blanc wasn’t disappointed in his players despite the loss: “Although we lost, I might surprise you by saying I’m very happy with how my team performed tonight. It had been a long time since they played that way. There were a lot of chances in the game; moments before they made it 3-1 we could have pegged it back to 2-2 (Wendel hit the crossbar just before Lyon scored their third).
