Fulham Through To Europa Semis After Win At Wolfsburg
Fulham Through To Europa Semis After Win At WolfsburgJose Mourinho has Inter Milan through to the Champions League semifinals for the first time since 2003 after a relatively easy 1-0 victory over CSKA Moscow on the Russian team’s home field. Internazionale took the first leg of the quarterfinal matchup by an identical 1-0 score, giving them a 2-0 aggregate victory in the series. They’ll now face defending champion Barcelona for the right to advance to the finals.

The perception among pundits and soccer betting enthusiasts alike was that Inter Milan was simply the superior team, and that was reflected in the Serie A side being priced as a +138 away favorite in the matchup. Takeback on CSKA Moscow was +220, with the draw priced at +230. The single goal once again made UNDER wagers successful for the second time in the series.

Netherlands national Wesley Sneijder scored the only goal of the game off of a free kick just six minutes from the start. The low kick snuck past the wall of CSKA defenders and eluded goalie Igor Akinfeev to give Mourinho’s charges the margin they needed. The game was essentially over when CSKA’s Chidi Odiah was sent off after receiving a red card early in the second half, and Internazionale had little trouble fending off the 10 man Russian side the rest of the way.

Inter Milan had struggled in the Champions League for most of the past decade, and many suggest that Mourinho was hired as much for this competition as for Serie A supremacy. After the game, he spoke of the confidence his team has as they prepare to meet defending champions Barcelona in the semifinals:

"We have put together five consecutive wins and reach the semi-final in a thoroughly deserved manner. You can talk about a complete transformation in the history of Inter in the Champions League.”

"This team now has confidence and the right mentality. It is a Champions League side. Now anything can happen. We can win the trophy or not but, in any case, from now on, when Inter set foot in Europe, it will be a totally different affair. The team has changed its mentality. It reaches fixtures with a sense of security, solidity and defensive strength. The squad has matured and now wants more."

For Mourinho personally, it’s the fourth time he’s reached this stage of Champions League play:

"It is my fourth personal semi. I won once, lost on penalties and another time lost because there was a goal that wasn't a goal. Now we'll see what happens. We have two dreams at this stage: to reach the final and to win it. The dreams are alive."

Mourinho won the Champions League title with Porto in 2004. He reached the semifinals while at the helm of Premier League powerhouse Chelsea, losing to Liverpool in both 2005 and 2007.
