The absolute king of the champions league is Real Madrid from Spain with 9 cups on the shelf of history and the only team to have 5 cups back to back and the first team to win the first cup in the history of the champions league 1956 – 1957 – 1958 – 1959 – 1960 – 1966 – 1998 – 2000 & 2002. No team has been able to surpass this impressive record but some have come close to match the cups. A.C. Milan is another giant in the tournament with 7 cups to their name and one back to back. 1963 – 1969 -1989 -1990 – 1994 – 2003 – 2007. In the last few years they have not so well but A.C. Milan is a strong team and it will be no surprise to see them back on the board in the near future, at the moment is the only team with enough cups to catch the ultimate leader Real Madrid. Liverpool from England is no stranger to the “table des champions” with 5 cups of their own and one back to back; 1977 – 1978 – 1981 – 1984 – 2005. Liverpool has been going through a dry spell on this tournament in the last 5 year and best has been a sub-championship in 2007. Bayern Munich from Germany joins the elite group with 4 cups with 3 back to back; 1974 – 1975 – 1976 – 2001. A silent menace ready o make a comeback, as they are in the semi finals in the current 2009/2010 camping. AFC Ajax from Holland also carries 4 cups under its arms with 3 back to back equally as the German team; 1971 – 1972 – 1973 - 1995 but has been very quiet since 1995 and gone through a dry spell in the tournament since then. Barcelona FC from Spain is the current champion and is in the battle for the 2010 championship and first back to back; With no back to backs but 3 cups to their name; 1992 – 2006 – 2009. Currently is tagged to be the best team in the world with the highest payroll in history o soccer. Manchester United from England also holds 3 cups and no repeats; 1968 – 1999 – 2008. The 2010 edition did not favor any of the English teams which did not make it to the semi finals. Benfica from Portugal, Inter de Milan from Italy and Nottingham Forest from England they all hold two cups each and back to back as well; Benfica in 1961- 1962, Inter de Milan 1964 -1965 and Nottingham Forest 1979 -1980. Porto from Portugal and Juventus from Italy hold 2 cups each but no back to backs; Porto 1987 - 2004 and Juventus 1985 – 1996. In the present; Inter de Milan is in the semi finals in the 2010 campaign. The following teams hold 1 cup each; Marseille 1993, Steaua Bucureşti 1986, Hamburg 1983, Celtic 1967, Borussia Dortmund 1997, Red Star Belgrade 1991, PSV Eindhoven 1988, Aston Villa 1982 and Feyenoord 1970. Breakdown of countries with most Champions League Cups is topped by Spain with a total of 12, followed by Italy and England with 11, Germany and Netherlands with 6 and Portugal with 4. Italy is the King of Sub-Championships with 14 runner ups. Now we wait to see what happens on the current campaign as Barcelona fights for another cup and their first back to back, Inter de Milan looking for a comeback and to match the Spaniards 12 cups and Bayern Munich looking to match Liverpool with 5 cups.
