Chelsea Captain Terry Blasts Conditions At Wembly
Chelsea Captain Terry Blasts Conditions At WemblyChelsea managed to overcome some bad luck and defeat Portsmouth for the FA Cup at Wembley Stadium, but many of their players were unhappy with the conditions of the field. The turf at the stadium has been a frequent source of complaints from soccer players, and has been replaced 10 times since its completion in 2007. Despite these efforts, there are numerous complaints that the pitch is simply not good enough for a stadium that is supposed to be the centerpiece of British football.

After defeating Portsmouth in a game in which the usually potent Chelsea offense found themselves slipping and sliding all over the field, team captain John Terry called on the Football Authority to take action before the England national team plays Mexico in a World Cup warm up game:

“I worry massively about the surface. It is the worst pitch I have played on during the whole season. It is simply not good enough for a Wembley pitch. It ruined the final. The FA have to decide if this is a football pitch or an events stadium. We trained on it on the Friday night and noticed it was really dry and patchy. We’ve got a huge England game coming up before we go off to the World Cup and something needs to be done about it in the meantime.”

Teammate Frank Lampard added:

“It was terrible. The only thing I can say, I suppose, is thank goodness it’s a friendly against Mexico. I don’t know the reasons for why the pitch is like this. We will never use it as an excuse for the way we played, but Portsmouth would also say the pitch was poor. It’s not what it should be for a Wembley surface.”

The complaints about the condition of the Wembley pitch began anew during Carling Cup play between Manchester United and Aston Villa in February. Much of the blame has been leveled at Wembley’s status as a multi-use facility. Unlike most Premier League stadiums which are soccer only facilities, Wembley hosts a variety of events including rugby, American football games, concerts and even motocross events.

As Chelsea’s Terry intimated, Wembley management may ultimately be forced to decide whether they want to be a multi-use event stadium or a football stadium. Based on the reaction from the players that have played there, trying to do both is simply not working.
