Sir Alex Ferguson Gives Props To Manchester United Ownership
Sir Alex Ferguson Gives Props To Manchester United OwnershipManchester United’s US based ownership has been a sore point for many of their supporters since the Glazer family purchased the team. On Thursday, the received a public display of support from team manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Clearly aware of the side on which ‘his bread is buttered’, Ferguson completely dismissed criticism of the Glazers in an interview with the Daily Mirror newspaper and insisted they had been ‘great’ owners. In the same interview he indicated that Man U didn’t have many areas in which they were deficient, and maintained that striker Dimitar Berbatov wouldn’t be sent packing.

The Glazer family has been the butt of protests by Man U faithful despite the team’s solid performance on the field. Their critics suggest they’ve handled the team’s finances carelessly, while simultaneously complaining that they’re not willing to spend to improve the club. Rising ticket prices were also met with hostility, though there’s no small element of provincialism in the anti-Glazer sentiments—there are many who simply don’t like one of England’s most storied football teams being owned by Americans. The final game of the year against Stoke City saw a number of vociferous protests overshadow Manchester United’s 4-0 victory as they finished the season in second place, one point back of Premiership champion Chelsea.

While Sir Alex knows who signs his paychecks, he certainly didn’t equivocate as he praised the Glazer’s stewardship of Man U:

''They've been great owners. They have supported me every way I've asked them.”

''There's no other reason to think they haven't supported me. If you look at any time I've wanted a player they've provided the money; if you look at what we've done this season - and people don't recognise this - we've spent over £20 million on young players.”

''We've bought Chris Smalling, Mame Diouf and Javier Hernandez. People don't realise how we're structured and how we see our future of the club. We've always based it on a nucleus and foundation of young players developing in the club.''

In a separate interview, Ferguson insisted that striker Dimitar Berbatov was not on the transfer block:

"No, he will not - definitely not (be sold). There's a problem with Manchester United in terms of expectation and media attention. There's speculation every year and we've got to live with that hype. We know Dimitar is a good player and he will be with us next year."

He also expressed confidence in the current team roster and that wholesale changes in the offseason weren’t necessary:

"We don't have a great deal to improve on. The one area of concern last season was that we had 16 players missing through injury. That impacts on the stability of the team as the season develops. But we always felt that when our back four was in place there was a sense of purpose and strength."

Manchester United finished with 85 points this season, but despite a winning campaign there was a palpable sense of disappointment among supporters. They failed to win the Premier League title after three consecutive championship seasons, but their early ouster from Champions League play could have been a bigger source of displeasure among the Man U faithful. After dispatching AC Milan, Manchester United was eliminated by Bayern Munich as they lost both the home and away legs to the German Bundesliga side.
