The full situation borders on comical. Manuel Pellegrini is still ‘officially’ in charge of Real Madrid, though is obviously aware that the axe could fall at any moment. Jose Mourinho is still ‘officially’ in charge of Inter Milan, though every statement he’s made in the past few days make his intentions clear. Inter Milan maintains that Mourinho is ‘officially’ still their team manager, though they have started to quietly search for a replacement. All Mourinho’s spokesman Eladio Parames will confirm is that his boss is scheduled to meet with Inter Milan President Massimo Moratti any time now and discuss his status: "They [Mourinho and Moratti] will meet in Milan. If not in the next few hours, then tomorrow." Of course Mourinho himself hasn’t been as equivocal. In an interview with the Spanish newspaper Marca—which referred to him as the ‘new’ manager of Real Madrid—Mourinho indicated that he wanted to make history by becoming the first player or coach to win three different European league titles: "No player or coach has won the three important leagues and I want to be the first to do it. Ancelotti, Capello, Van Nistelrooy, Beckham and others have won two, but not three. I would like to be the first to win the Grand Slam of the Spanish, Italian and English leagues." He’s also already discussing his expectations for his players—the ones on the Real Madrid roster, that is. In particular, he’s excited about working with Cristiano Ronaldo: "Cristiano's a phenomenon. We are both Portuguese, he is the best player in the world and I am one of the best coaches in the world. I want a lot of goals from him next season. "Nobody can criticise him if he's with Paris Hilton on holiday, or he goes to LA or he buys a Ferrari because someone who trains and plays as he does is from another planet. He is an historic footballer." Every indication suggests that Manuel Pellegrini is out at Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho is in and Inter Milan needs to find a replacement. The pieces should begin to fall in place within the next few days, though in typical Mourinho fashion he’ll find a way to make it exceptionally dramatic.

As of Tuesday morning, Jose Mourinho is officially still under contract to Inter Milan. Despite this, every indication is that ‘The Special One’ is set to take the reins of Spanish La Liga club Real Madrid. Rumor has it that the two sides even have a deal in place—hammered out the night before Mourinho coached the Italian Serie A side to a Champions League victory. Separate reports also suggest that Inter has quietly begun a search for Mourinho’s replacement at the San Siro.
