After an opening game that saw Argentina struggle to score against Nigerian goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, Diego Maradona’s team exploded for four goals in a 4-1 whipping of South Korea. They’ve already clinched the group stage but will want to keep their offense humming along in preparation for the elimination games to come. Greece is still alive to advance, but they’ve got to have a couple of things break in their favor—they need Nigeria to beat South Korea, but that’s the easy part. The more difficult task will be securing a draw or victory against an Argentina side that looks like they could go deep in the knockout stage.

With the obvious exception of the implosion of the French team, there may not be a bigger disappointment in World Cup play to date than Cameroon. Many soccer pundits considered them to be the best African team in the competition and at the very least a tough adversary for any opponent. Based on their opening game loss to Japan, that assessment couldn’t have been more wrong—Cameroon’s players looked listless and unfocused while manager Paul Le Guen looked to be in over his head in terms of tactics and matchups. The result was a completely inept offensive attack—Cameroon didn’t get their first shot on goal until the 37th minute, and Japan immediately launched a counterstrike that resulted in Keisuke Honda’s game winning goal.

Slovakia vs New Zealand
There were great hopes for the Slovakian team; most experts predicted a brutal win over New Zealand, however that ship sailed. The question is whether Slovakia played terrible or New Zealand did a marvelous defense, bottom line was a 1 – 1 draw. The game was filled with many scoring opportunities from both sides; New Zealand was determined to demonstrate that they were not in the World Cup by getting a free pass. Slovakia was not expecting this reaction from New Zealand, but managed to get it together before catastrophe struck.

The 2002 World Cup was highlighted by South Korea’s memorable run to the semifinals, defeating European powers Portugal, Spain and Italy along the way. They’ve still got a ways to go to improve upon that performance, but they got the 2010 tournament off to a great start on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over a listless Greece side. Lee Jung-Soo and Park Ji-Sung both scored as South Korea took an early advantage in Group B play.

Japan and Holland both won their opening games in Group E play, and a win here could clinch a spot in the final 16. The Dutch side entered the tournament as one of the favorites to win, and despite a slow start managed to secure a comfortable win over Denmark. Japan played competently in a somewhat forgettable game against Cameroon, but used a first half goal to take a 1-0 victory. Not surprisingly, Holland is a prohibitive favorite in this matchup.

England should have won their opening game against the United States, but had to settle for a draw due to the now famous miscue by goalkeeper Robert Green. Green’s blunder has been dubbed ‘The Hand of Clod’ by the always quick witted UK media, a reference to Diego Maradona’s legendary ‘Hand of God’ goal for Argentina against England in the 1986 World Cup. All of the hoopla over Green’s ‘soft’ goal has obscured the fact that England played pretty well against a highly underrated US side. At the time, there was some concern about their relative lack of offense in the game but that doesn’t look like much of an issue in context of what has been to date the lowest scoring World Cup tournament in history.

With a number of highly ranked teams getting off to a slow start in World Cup play, there was some expectation that Germany could suffer a similar fate against an Australian team known for solid team defense. It didn’t quite work out that way—Germany scored just 8 minutes into the game and shredded the ‘Socceroos’ defense throughout the contest en route to a 4-0 victory in the Group D opener for both sides. Germany looked nothing like the boring, methodical team that they’re often accused of being as four different players scored goals in the lopsided win.
