Liverpool parted company with team manager Rafael Benitez after six years at the helm of the English Premier League club. The decision was reportedly one of ‘mutual consent’, and it doesn’t look as if Benitez will be unemployed for long—he’s been tabbed as Jose Mourinho’s replacement at Inter Milan and is currently finalizing a deal with the Italian Serie A side. There’s been some drama, however, as the announcement of Benitez’s hiring has been scheduled and re-scheduled several times now as the two sides work toward mutually agreeable terms. The current indication is that a deal is in place and just awaiting Benitez’s signature.

With previous manager Jose Mourinho taking over at Real Madrid and with a $19 million US transfer fee for his services in their pocket, Inter Milan has set their sights high as they search for a replacement. One high profile name, however, has reportedly taken himself out of the running to lead the reigning Serie A and Champions League title holder. According to sources in Italy close to the situation, current England team manager Fabio Capello has indicated that he’ll be staying put until at least 2012. With Inter Milan and several other teams on the hunt for a new manager, reports suggest that a high level meeting between Capello and the English Football Association (FA) will take place this week to work out the contractual arrangements.

Manchester United’s US based ownership has been a sore point for many of their supporters since the Glazer family purchased the team. On Thursday, the received a public display of support from team manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Clearly aware of the side on which ‘his bread is buttered’, Ferguson completely dismissed criticism of the Glazers in an interview with the Daily Mirror newspaper and insisted they had been ‘great’ owners. In the same interview he indicated that Man U didn’t have many areas in which they were deficient, and maintained that striker Dimitar Berbatov wouldn’t be sent packing.

England’s team captain Rio Ferdinand has been ruled out of World Cup play following an injury sustained in the team’s first practice session in South Africa. The 31 year old center back injured a knee ligament in a scrimmage at England's training ground near Rustenburg. Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson will take Ferdinand’s place on the roster, while Liverpool striker Steven Gerrard becomes acting captain.

As of Tuesday morning, Jose Mourinho is officially still under contract to Inter Milan. Despite this, every indication is that ‘The Special One’ is set to take the reins of Spanish La Liga club Real Madrid. Rumor has it that the two sides even have a deal in place—hammered out the night before Mourinho coached the Italian Serie A side to a Champions League victory. Separate reports also suggest that Inter has quietly begun a search for Mourinho’s replacement at the San Siro.

Heading into the European soccer offseason there was much speculation that Barcelona would be very active in the transfer market, and they wasted no time getting things started on Wednesday with the announcement that they’d signed Valencia’s David Villa. Barcelona paid a 34.2 million Euro (approximately $43.5 million US) transfer fee for the rights to Villa. Villa, the leading goal scorer in La Liga this season, will sign a four year deal paying him a reported 7 million Euros (approximately $8.8 million US) a season.

Some suggest it’s difficult to control, others say it’s a knuckleballing nightmare for goal keepers. Now Adidas is responding vociferously to the nature and timing of the players’ criticisms.

Even as Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho celebrated his team’s Serie A title, the questions about his future continued hot and heavy. Although Mourinho again insisted that he won’t take time to consider his own plans until after next Saturday’s Champions League finale, his statements did little to quell suggestions that he’d be coaching somewhere else next season. Mourinho has been linked to a number of clubs during his time at the San Siro, but the most viable scenario would have ‘The Special One’ heading to Spain to take over Real Madrid.
