Dan The Man's Super Duper Super Bowl Preview Issue2
Dan The Man's Super Duper Super Bowl Preview Issue1SUNDAY FEB 7TH 6:25 PM EST CBS TV(CURRENT BET PHOENIX LINE) COLTS - 5.5 TOTAL 56.5

We are just days away from the biggest game of the year, the ultimate battle for the ultimate prize in pigskin. Who will be holding the coveted Vince Lombardi trophy when its all said and done on Super Sunday? All week long I am going to break the game down from all angles leading up to my prediction, which if past history is any indication, take it to the bank, sans Rip Torn, safe deposit box, or pickle factory, as I have been correct in each of the last six years. Super Bowl 44 should be one of the greats of our lifetime, lets find out why.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Special teams might be understated in the regular season, but in the postseason and especially the Super Bowl , they can be what make or break a game. We have seen huge swings in games in recent years by special teams and as many of you all well know having been on either end of it, the kicking game can win or lose the biggest game of them all.

COLTS- Other than the fact that their place kicker Matt Stover has been in the league since the merger, he has kicked in many high pressure situations in the past and can be relied upon as a trust worthy big game kicker , but not one that can nail field goals from anything over 46 yards or so with any certainty, which could be a factor late in this game. The return game for the Colts is where there is a major drop off when you compare it with the Saints. KR Chad Simpson has had a return for a TD this year, but is largely inconsistent and not nearly as big a factor as Reggie Bush is and PR T.J Rushing is nothing to write home about. Sending Pierre “Garcon” Garcon to return some punts could be a factor if the Colts take that chance. . Punter Pat McAfee has had a nice year averaging 44.3 yards per punt with a long of 60 yards this season.

SAINTS-This is where the Saints could have a huge advantage if there are lots of punts by the Colts in this game as they have one of the deadliest in the game in Reggie Bush waiting for McAfee punts and could be huge when it comes to field position. Until two weeks ago I would have said the kicking advantage goes squarely to Matt Stover even though he is 60 years old, but after little used Garret Hartley, who took over for the injured John “Big Top” Carney earlier this season hit one of the biggest kicks in recent NFL history to beat the Vikes, his confidence is soaring. KR Courtney “Mike “ Roby has been huge as of late and along with Bush give the Saints a huge edge in the return game. Punter Thomas Morstead has an almost identical per punt average as Pat McAfee at 43.6 yards.

EDGE-SAINTS - Both teams have bright spots , but the Saints just have more of them and with Reggie Bush returning punts Nola has the ability to really change field position whether they kick to him or not. If it comes down to a field goal both kickers aren't reliable from long yardage, but both seem to have the ability to be lights out from 46 yards or less and with Hartley's youth and confidence that continues to grow I like him just a skosh more than Stover.
