| 2011 Wimbledon Women’s Draw Predictions For Entire Tournament |
Let’s take a look at the seedings. 1) Caroline Wozniacki 2) Vera Zvonareva 3) Li Na 4) Victoria Azarenka 5) Maria Sharapova 6) Francesca Schiavone 7) Serena Williams 8) Petra Kvitova 9) Marion Bartoli 10) Samantha Stosur 11) Andrea Petkovic 12) Svetlana Kuznetsova 13) Agnieszka Radwanska 14) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 15) Jelena Jankovic 16) Julia Goerges First let’s analyze the dark horses that can leap unexpectedly on their respective days. Venus Williams is seeded 24. But, let’s just forget this number and give it to Venus. She is the most successful active grass courter with 5 Wimbledon titles. She is expected to make it deep into the second week as usual. Jelena Dokic meets Francesca Schiavone in the very first round and that would be a match worth watching. Dokic has this reputation of creating upsets and she has a fan following for various reasons. The crowd will definitely be on her back. Sabine Lisicki: This German won the Birmingham grass court tune-up and, now healthy, is a good 50 slots better than what her ranking indicates. 17th seed Kaia Kanepi: This rolling Estonian tends to post strong Slam results. And among the top 16 seeds Jelena Jankovic and Svetlana Kuznetsova can at least be expected to live up to their seedings and reach the 4th round. Julia Goerges has made huge strides off late and she will be noted with interest. And among the lesser known yet consistent players, no.8 Petra Kvitova and no.9 Marion Bartoli should reach the last 8 stage. Their consistency in the slams is appreciable. Bartoli is coming here on the back of a semifinal run at Paris and Kvitova was a semifinalist at last year’s Wimbledon. Bartoli is also a former finalist at the All England club. Enigmatic no.10 seed Aussie Sam Stosur has everything that is required to win here. Beautiful net play, athleticism and some fine groundstrokes but, she has to make that mental switch to progress to the next level. She’ll be watched as always. Top seed Caroline Wozniacki will grab eye balls as usual. She might make it deep into the second week. But, if she wins here, it would be a shock of Himalayan proportions. She is one of those Barbie dolls that is just on the court to have a good time and give a good time to the on lookers as well. Not champion material for sure. Francesca Schiavone will win hearts but will not win Wimbledon because you need more than just finesse and ball retrieving capabilities to win on grass. But, she is a sweetheart nevertheless, who will compete like her life depended on the match. Victoria Azarenka is seeded 4. Her self-confidence is her biggest ally and people with that can create wonders. Now coming to the real contenders. The big game players. Maria Sharapova is erratic and very unpredictable. She might be up against Wozniacki in the QF. But, she knows the stage and is mentally very strong. If she can curb her errors and play some sane tennis, there is no stopping her. She is after all one of the most naturally talented players on the tennis planet. Li Na has a huge backing nowadays post her Paris success. The whole of China will be seeing her matches and the pressure is bound to be huge. She has had decent success here in the past. Her possible QF with Serena would be the match of the tournament. If she can cross that hurdle, she will be the champ. Vera Zvonareva has made huge strides in the women’s ladder. She will be making the SF for sure. But, will she make that final mental switch that even Andy Murray is finding it difficult to make? Time will tell. But, she is a competitor and quite bullish. Now, coming to the real superstar of women’s tennis, Serena Williams. She has played just 2 matches since winning last year’s Wimbledon. She is short of form and match fitness and is rusty. She has a tough first round opponent in Aravene Rezai. If, Serena slowly picks up steam and is in the 2nd week, there would be no stopping her. Again, her match against Li Na would be the potential title decider. Up next would be Sharapova in another blockbuster match. One thing for sure is that the re-emergence of Serena has induced that much needed spark and spunk into the proceedings. There would be more fans interest in the women’s draw. So either Serena Williams, Li Na or Maria Sharapova, in that order for the Venus Rosewater Dish. This great tournament will be fun to watch and a joy to wager on.
