| Things To Watch For at Wimbledon on Day 2 |
Serena Williams takes the court in a Grand Slam for the first time since she hoisted the Rosewater Dish last July. The four-time Wimbledon champion will face Aravane Rezai, a former top-15 player, in the first round. Rezai has plummeted in the rankings of late, a fall which coincides with an extortion lawsuit she filed against her father. Expect an easy Serena victory in the opening match on Centre Court. Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will follow Serena on the All England Club's biggest court, facing Mikhail Kukushkin and Jeremy Chadry, respectively. Last year, Federer struggled in his opening match at Wimbledon against Alejandro Falla, eventually going the distance before avoiding the upset. Rain interrupted play at Wimbledon on Monday, the first time in two years that weather has pushed back matches in England. As a result, Andy Roddick and will make his tournament debut a day late. He and Andreas Beck are first off on Court No. 1. Victoria Azarenka, Juan Martin Del Potro and Gilles Simon are among the players who were leading in Monday matches when rain canceled play for the day. Maria Sharapova also plays Tuesday. The location of her match has yet to be set. She won't play before noon ET. The day's biggest match got bumped out to the new Court No. 3. John Isner and Nicolas Mahut figured to get a grand stage, or a familiar one, for the rematch of their epic three-day match from last year's tournament. Somehow, officials believed neither Centre Court nor Court 18 (which now bears a plaque honoring their historic feat) should house the rematch, a decision which reeks of the arrogance that too often lingers around the All England Club. (We all thought the match should be on one of those two courts? Fine, they'll show us!) This should especially disappoint Mathilde Johansson and Heather Watson, the two women who are scheduled to play on Court No. 3 after Isner and Mahut. Might want to get comfortable in the locker room, ladies.
