2011 Wimbledon Women’s Preview: Marion Bartoli vs Sabine Lisicki
2011 Wimbledon Women’s Preview: Marion Bartoli vs Sabine LisickiWhile many tennis fans thought that Serena Williams would be playing in Wimbledon at this point, she was eliminated. This does not mean that there is a lack of great tennis to be seen.

Frenchwoman (9) Marion Bartoli and German woman Sabine Lisicki might be playing the best tennis of their lives. Bartoli shocked American (7) Serena Williams after diverting disaster the previous two rounds which saw her on the brink of elimination. Lisicki can relate winning her last two matches relatively easily after saving two match points in the second round to oust this year's Queen of Roland Garros Chinese woman Li Na.

The German survived Li by unloading on serves at crucial points and playing a near stalemate on unforced errors having just one more for the match. Lisicki lasered eight more winners, 13 more from her powerful serve. Breaking one more chance in 11 opportunities was the difference between winning and losing the second round as the Chinese woman served twice for the match and was broken.

The Frenchwoman looked done in her second round match, but all of a sudden aggressive play triggered a phenomenal comeback during the second set to win the match in three 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 over Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino. Bartoli shook shaky serving, especially on the second serve, to extend the match. Her saving grace was moving forward which saw her win 39-of-59 points at the net.

In another pressure-cooking match Bartoli rallied again to beat her third-round opponent Italian (21) Flavia Pennetta 5-7, 6-4, 9-7. With the Italian seeded this close result was less surprising as the total time of the match was one of the longest on the women's side this fortnight lasting three hours and nine minutes. Shakier serving was present for Bartoli who overcame a 58 percent first serve percentage thanks to winning 23 more points on return. Pennetta did excellent coming forward winning seven more points in five more risks than the Frenchwoman who won despite hitting 20 less winners.

Bartoli's innate ability in London to never get too high or low has been the primary reason why she's still standing in the ladies' single draw. Her serving was at a penultimate high against Williams lacing 10 aces, two more than the American who only won one less service point. The tight match didn't translate to three sets as the Frenchwoman took the match with one more break in one more opportunity.

As hard as it is to go against Bartoli (1-2 against her quarterfinals opponent) who is 9-0 on grass courts this season winning in Eastbourne and being a 2007 Wimbledon Runner-Up while making the semifinals at the 2011 French Open, I'm one man who will be. When you live on the edge long enough, you're bound to fall off. While watching Dominguez Lino try closing out the match, it wasn't her game that fell part it was the Frenchwoman's game lifting.

Conversely Lisicki got help from Li with smarts more than aggression. If the German is able to keep her cool like she did in the second round and thereafter bouncing Misaki Doi of Japan and Petra Cetkovska of the Czech Republic, she'll win with ease. That'll be hard for the 2009 semifinalist at the third Slam against an opponent she had never lost to until three years ago at the All England Club falling 6-2, 6-4 to Bartoli, but with her youth and more importantly less strain on her body in London this time around should help Lisicki improve upon her torrid 10-0 run on grass this month.

Marion Bartolie and Sabine Lisicki have clashed just three times in the past. Bartoli won their first match, and the only one played on grass to date, at Wimbledon in 2008. Lisicki then won their next two encounters, with both of these taking place on clay.

No match between these two players has ever gone to three sets.

This one will go to the wire and Sabine Lisicki will emerge with the victory.
