Tennis Preview: Stuttgart Mercedes Cup Outlook and Players to Watch
Tennis Preview: Stuttgart Mercedes Cup Outlook and Players to WatchThe tennis world is filled with excitement as the Mercedes Cup gets underway this week. The event is filled with some of the world’s greatest players as they take to the clay in search of a championship

The Stuttgart tennis odds have Gael Monfils as favorite for this year’s competitive looking Mercedes Cup.

Jurgen Melzer, Mikhail Youzhny and Gilles Simon are the rest of the top four seeds, but there is plenty of strength in depth in this week’s field.

Here are just some of the odds for the current field. 7/2 Gael Monfils, 11/2 Nikolay Davydenko, 7/1 Jurgen Melzer, Gilles Simon, 9/1 Mikhail Youzhny, 10/1 Florian Mayer, 14/1 Bar

Frenchman Monfils heads the field after having a good Davis Cup in France’s win over Germany, but there might be questions over his frame of mind after his split with coach Roger Rashid. Monfils has a very tricky potential quarter-final with Florian Mayer in his section, with Juan Carlos Ferrero, coming back from injury, another interesting contender in the top half. Marcel Granollers, who will be coming back from Davis Cup duty, Mikhail Youzhny has also had a hit and miss year, especially on clay, meaning there is a real chance that someone unexpected could make their way through the top half.

Jurgen Melzer is the second seed. The Austrian is fresh after a week off from Wimbledon having taken the mixed doubles title, but has a difficult first round opponent in Santiago Giraldo. Nikolay Davydenko has had a strange year, mixing in the kind of losses he never would have produced three or four years ago with an ATP title. His first round opponent Cedrik Marcel-Stebe, is an up and coming talent too.

Gilles Simon and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez complete the seeds in the bottom half of the draw. There are lots of difficult early round clashes here, so it’s very hard to be able to pick out a fancied winner. Italian Fabio Fognini has talent but temperament, and he could put together a decent run at 33/1 with Stan James. Even with this talented field, all eyes will be on Gael Monfils.

Monfils will make his return to the ATP World Tour, after helping France to a 4-1 quarterfinal victory over Germany in Davis Cup. The Frenchman is set to lead a field of 32 players in Stuttgart, Germany.

World No. 7 Gael Monfils returns to clay-court competition for the second week of July, following a successful Davis Cup effort against Germany. The 24-year-old, who reached the Mercedes Cup final a year ago, won a his singles rubber to give France a critical 2-0 advantage over the weekend.

Monfils is 19-7 overall for the 2011 season. Prior to Davis Cup, the Frenchman made the third round at Wimbledon, before falling to Lukasz Kubot in four sets.

The World No. 7 leads the top half of the draw that includes: (3) former champion Mikhail Youzhny, (5) Florian Mayer and (7) Andreas Seppi. Other participants in his section are Victor Hanescu, Mischa Zverev, Sergiy Stakhovsky, Philipp Petzschner Marcel Granollers and former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Monfils is scheduled to begin his run against veteran Hanescu. The nearest seed to the Frenchman is Mayer, who looks to be a likely quarterfinal-round challenger. Should the seeded players progress through the draw, Monfils will face former title-winner Youzhny in the semifinal.

Second seed Jurgen Melzer has been placed in the same half as (4) Gilles Simon, (6) Nikolay Davydenko and (8) Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Additional competitors in the bottom half include: 2010 champion Albert Montanes, Fabio Fognini, Pablo Andujar, Radek Stepanek, Jeremy Chardy and Lukasz Kubot.

The World No. 12 is slated to commence his effort against Santiago Giraldo in the opening round. Now for a complete outlook and players to watch for the event.

Former world number one and 2003 French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero returns to competitive tennis after struggling to recover from wrist and knee surgery. He withdrew from eight tournaments at the beginning of the year until finally deciding to play the Barcelona Open, in April. The Spaniard won a few matches in his comeback but was forced to withdraw from the French Open and Wimbledon due to lingering injury issues. This will be only his third tournament of the year and first in two months. He opens with a qualifier in the first round.

The French contingent will hope to keep the good times rolling at the Tennis Club Weissenhof, in Stuttgart. It was the scene of their 4-1 Davis Cup quarterfinal rout over the Germans this past week and they have had a finalist at the Mercedes Cup each of the past three years (Gasquet, Chardy and Monfils).

After retiring from last year’s final with an ankle injury Gael Monfils returns as the top seed. He is accompanied by 18th-ranked Gilles Simon as they look to back up their Davis Cup win with a Mercedes Cup title.

This tournament is good preparation for the U.S. Open.. The U.S. Open Series does not commence until next week but there are two clay court events on the docket this week to whet our whistle.

Many top players in the Stuttgart draw are in desperate need of a solid showing to salvage poor mid-seasons. This includes second-seed Jurgen Melzer (3-4 since May), third-seed Mikhail Youzhny (7-8 since April) and fourth-seed Gilles Simon (2-2 grass court season including a third round exit at Wimbledon).

Philipp Petzschner (GER) over 3 Mikhail Youzhny (RUS). Petzschner enters the Mercedes Cup in great form. He reached the final of the Gerry Weber Open, in early June, and won Germany’s lone Davis Cup rubber against France. As I mentioned above, Youzhny is struggling as of late and would like to forget his clay court season, which saw him bow out in the first round of all three Masters 1000 events and exit the French Open in the third round. Petzschner won their most recent meeting, 7-6 3-6 6-2, on the clay of the BMW Open in May. I think the German gets the better of the Russian again, on clay, once again in his home country.

Lukasz Kubot (POL). Victory celebrations aside, the doubles specialist has been quite the singles dynamo this year, upsetting Nicolas Almagro at the French Open and Gael Monfils at Wimbledon. He reached the quarterfinals here in 2009 and has a favorable draw to progress as far again. The Pole opens with Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the first round.

7 Andreas Seppi (ITA). Seppi won the AEGON International title in Eastbourne a few weeks ago and defeated defending Mercedes Cup champ Albert Montanes in the first round at Wimbledon. The Italian has been gifted an encouraging draw with Youzhny (see above) the other seed in his section.

Who will win the event is anyone’s guess, but it will be a joy to watch and thrilling to wager on. Check online sportsbook Bet Phoenix for all of your tennis betting needs.
