ATP Tennis: James Blake vs. Ernest Gulbis
ATP Tennis: James Blake vs. Ernest GulbisThe Atlanta championship in Men’s tennis gets underway with a fierce battle between James Blake vs. Ernest Gulbis.

Online sportsbook BetPhoenix has all of the odds on this event and James Blake is a -140 favorite for this match.

This time last year retirement seemed just a matter of months away for James Blake. Would the injury stricken former world number four really be willing to drop down at challenger level at the age of 31.

However we underestimated Blake's fortitude. The New Yorker still loves the game and after many months of slogging it on in the twilight zones of tennis, he's back in the top 100 and feeling a second wind after winning two challengers in recent months.

It remains to be seen whether Blake can still be a force on the main tour. He came close to upsetting Marcos Baghdatis at Wimbledon but ultimately fell in five sets. The next couple of months will be key for him, leading up to his favourite tournament in the world at Flushing Meadows.

He has never beaten Gulbis before, losing twice to the Latvian in 2008 but Gulbis is in a slump right now. He's on a four match losing streak and has barely been able to buy a win since February. Being Gulbis that can change in an instant, the unpredictable Latvian has the talent to suddenly turn up out of the blue and walk away with this title.

American world No.89 will be facing the Latvia world No.78, Ernests Gulbis in the first round of the Atlanta Tennis Championships on Monday, July 18, 2011 at 23:05 GMT, an ATP World Tour 250 which is being held in Atlanta, U.S.A.

The head to head between both the players have played two matches against each other, as the Latvia world No. 78, Ernests Gulbis is leading the contest with 2-0 against the American. The previous encounter between both of them was in

2008 in Cincinnati Open, where Gulbis has thrashed out Black in a three set thriller with a score line of 6-4 1-6 6-3. Both the matches have been played in 2008.

The 22-year-old Latvian, however, has taken a step back in recent years and now registers at 81st in the world rankings. Gulbis is just 9-13 for his 2011 campaign and he has lost four straight matches dating back to the nice quarterfinals.

American player, James Blake has also continued his inconsistent performances this season with a win-loss record of 7-7 in 2011 and he comes in at No.89 in the world. Blake had been toiling outside the Top 100 for the majority of this year. However, he has won the 2011 Winnetka Challenger title earlier this month.

As per the prediction, it would be a three set thriller between both the players, as Ernests Gulbis could win the first round encounter in the Atlanta Tennis Championships. However this line says it all and shows why Blake could steal a victory in this match.
