| 2011 Atlanta Tennis Championships Match Preview: John Isner vs. James Blake |
World No.35 John Isner takes on compatriot James Blake for a place in the next round of the 2011 Atlanta Tennis Championships, an ATP World Tour 250 event being played here in Atlanta, USA. John Isner and James Blake looked like the best of friends as they teamed to defeat Marcelo Melo and Jamie Murray 6-4, 6-2 in their first-round doubles match Tuesday night at the Atlanta Tennis Championships. But on Wednesday they will be on opposite sides of the net when they face off in the second round of the singles portion of the tournament at the Racquet Club of the South in Norcross. Blake advanced by defeating Ernests Gulbis on Monday. Isner, a former Georgia player and the tournament’s third seed, received a bye. Their match is scheduled to begin no earlier than 7 p.m. on the Stadium Court. They have never faced each other before. After his record-breaking Wimbledon performance last year that fetched him the title of 'Marathon Man', John Isner saw some tough times on court and suffered disappointing losses. However, the 2011 season brought some success for the American who claimed his second ATP Singles title in Newport a few weeks ago. Isner's opponent, James Blake is currently ranked 91 in the world and is nearing the end of his career. Winner of 10 ATP Singles titles, Blake's best grand Slam performances came in Australian Open and US Open with a last eight finish. Blake's last title triumph came in New Haven CT in 2007 when he beat Mardy Fish to clinch his tenth silverware. Isner’s first opponent is former superstar James Blake, who is hoping the return to the fast concrete will be a boon to his comeback effort. Blake, 31, has not won more than two matches in a single ATP World Tour tournament since reaching the final in Queen’s Club in June 2009! Besides Wimbledon, he has only played in tournaments in the United States this year, including many Challenger Tour stops. It’s sad to see someone overcome so many injury-related obstacles throughout his career, only to fall on hard times once again. During his last two matches, however, Blake has shown he still has some juice left in the tank. At Wimbledon, he pushed Marcos Baghdatis to a tight five setter after falling behind two sets to none. In the first round in Atlanta he toppled the always dangerous (no, that wasn’t sarcasm for a change) Ernests Gulbis 5-7 7-6 6-2. Against the underachieving Latvian, Blake escaped from a woeful 49% first serve percentage and seven double faults to grind out the victory. The key statistic was 17-of-20 break points saved by the American, who demonstrated his clutch resiliency. With breaks of serve against Isner at a premium, Blake will have to be much more solid on his own serve to have a shot at the upset. This is a first meeting between both players and is bound to produce nail-biting tennis. Where Blake is quite experienced on hard courts, Isner is playing the best tennis of his career. The latter should come out a winner in three sets. ATP Pick: Isner (-250) over Blake
