Stepanek upset Murray in Paris

Stepanek upset Murray in Paris 13-seed Radek Stepanek (CZE) took out one of the favorites to win the title,World No4 Scot Andy Murray,in three sets,1-6,6-3,6-4,for the second gig upset at the BNP Parisbas Masters after Benneteau eliminated Federer on Wednesday.This was Stepanek first victory against Murray in five meetings.

Rafael Nadal,who saved five matchpoints on his opening round in a marathon against countryman Nicolas Almagro,nearly lost again to another Spaniard.Tommy Robredo served for the match at 5-4 in the second set after winning the first one 6-3.Nadal broke back to stay alive and won the next two games to level the match,and finally prevailed taking the third set 7-5.

In an all-French encounter Gael Monfils defeated Julien Benneteau easily 6-4,6-3.Benneteau could’t display the fantastic tennis he produced on the previous round when he took out the world No1 Roger Federer.

Two more Frenchmen battled for a spot in the quarter-finals,defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga dismissed Gilles Simon 6-2,6-3. Tsonga finds himself in the same situation he was last year,he needs to win the title in Paris to secure a spot af the ATP Tour Finals in London.

Robin Soderling (SWE) defeated Russian Nikolay Davidenko 6-3,3-6,6-4. Davidenko,however,clinches the 7th berth in London as Spaniard Fernando Verdasco,in 8th place on the standings,lost 6-3,3-6,4-6 to Croatian Marin Cilic.Soderling,currently 9th in the standings for a spot in in the ATP Tour Finals,is in the best position to overcome Verdasco.

Serbian 3-seed Novak Djokovic had no trouble in his quick 6-2,6-2 victory over French Arnaud Clement.

Juan Martin del Potro (ARG) got through when Chilian Farnando Gonzalez retired after they split the first two sets on tiebreaks.Gonzalez,who had an outside chance to qualify for London is out of the race.

Friday Quarter-Finals

#3 Novak Djokovic vs #9 Robin Soderling Djokovic is 4-0 against Soderling and huge favorite.

#2 Rafael Nadal vs # 8 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Nadal leads the series 3-1 but Tsonga will be super motivated as he is fighting for a spot in London,and will have the French fans support.

#12 Marin Cilic vs # 15 Gael Monfils Cilic will need to play at his best to beat Frenchman Monfils who will get,as Tsonga earlier,the crowd right behind him in this match.

#5 J.M. del Potro vs #13 Radek Stepanek Del Potro was suffering from stomach pains against Gonzalez on Thursday night,he hoppefully will feel better to face the red-hot Stepanek who took out world No 4 Andy Murray in the last round.However,the Argentine is the favorite.
