| Djokovic wins BNP Parisbas Masters 1000 |
After winning the first set 6-2,Djokovic took a 1-break 3-0 lead in the second and it looked like he was going to cruise through the final like he did in impressive manner against world No2 Rafael Nadal in the semis (6-2,6-3). The Serb, though, squandered his advantage as errors crept into his game, and Monfils pulled back to 3-3.Supported by the vociferous Paris crowd, the Frenchman got another break in the 11th game and went on to win the second set 7-5. In a thrilling third set that had the fans guessing all the way, Djokovic led twice by a break of serve. The Serb kept his nerve and composure as Monfils pulled back on both occasions to force the tiebreak.Djokovic overcame the enormous pressure and took it 7-3,a double fault by the frenchman giving him the match-winning point. This is Djokovic fith title of the season, and the second consecutive one as he defeated world No1 Roger Federer in his own backyard,Basel, the week before. Djokovic will be one of the big favorite at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London next week. Spaniard Fernando Verdasco clinched the eighth, and last berth, into the Finals when countryman Rafael Nadal did him the favor to eliminate Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the QFs.Tsonga was the last player still competing in Paris who could overcome Verdasco for the 8th spot with a title win. That was the last 2009 regular-season tournament, the eight best players of the year will battle in London for the prestigious ATP Tour Finals title. Check out the odds at BetPhoenix.com Sporbooks.
