| Spain Swept Czech Republic To Take 4th Davis Cup |
Spain’s captain Alberto Costa chose David Ferrer(#17) over Fernando Verdasco (#9), who suffered from a nagging knee injury, for the second singles match of Day1.The gritty Spaniard overcame a 2-set deficit against Radek Stapanek to give Spain a commanding 2-0 lead in a thrilling 5-set contest,1-2,2-6,6-4,6-4 8-6 which lasted 4 h 17 mn. With his team 0-2 Czech captain Yaroslav Navratil decided to replace Jan Hajek / Lukas Dlouhy with Berdych and Stepanek for Day 2’s doubles. It didn’t matter,Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco, supported by 16,000 fans, gave the third and decisive point to their country, defeating the Czechs 7-6,7-5,6-2. On Sunday,Day 3,Nadal and Ferrer completed the sweep defeating Stepanek and Berdych respectively in straight sets. Spain had captured its first Davis Cup title in this very same stadium in 2000 against Australia, when 2009 captain Alberto Costa was part of the team as a player. The Spaniards got their second in Sevilla defeating the United States in 2004,and last year claimed their third, and first victory away from home, when they defeated Argentina in Mar del Plata. Nadal rebounded from a 4-match losing streak,he didn’t win a set in the 3 round-robin matches he disputed at the ATP Tour Finals in London, and ends the season on a high note leading the Spanish team to defend the Davis Cup.The world No 2 hadn’t won a title in seven months, since Rome, suffering from tendinitis on both knees and later abdominal strain, and never playing at his best level after a two-month layoff in the summer. Nadal will look to help his country defend the title in 2010,the two-time defending champion opens in March against Switzerland led by world No1 Roger Federer. It’s going to be a tough task for the Swiss team as the Spaniards are 18-0 at home and have won their 20th consecutive tie on clay to become the first country to defend the Davis Cup title since Sweden in 1998. We’ll be first following Nadal’s and Federer’s 2010 debut at the Qatar Open in Doha, along with ATP World Tour Finals Champion Russian Nikolay Davidenko.
