Davydenko defeats World No1 and No2 to claim title In a thrilling final at the Qatar Open Saturday,World No6 Nikolay Davydenko recovered from a bagel first set and saved two matchpoints to beat World No2 Rafael Nadal 0-6,7-6,6-4 and win his 20th ATP World Tour Title.

The Russian previously dismissed World No1 Roger Federer 6-4,6-4 Friday in the semi-finals.Davydenko had also defeated Federer in the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour Finals in November, beating then the Swiss for the first time to break an 0-12 career record. He went on to beat Juan Martin del Potro in the final to claim the most prestigious title of his career.

Rafael Nadal, who helped Spain claim its fourth Davis Cup title in December in Barcelone, looked to be back at his best level when he took the first seven games, surrendering only one point on serve in the first set.It was the first time in 338 matches that Davydenko had lost a 6-0 set and the 10th time in his career, never recovering before to claim victory.

He regrouped, coming more often to the net in the second set,but failed to serve it out at 5-4.In the eventual tiebreak,Davydenko saved matchpoints at 5-6 and 7-8 and took it 10-8 to level the match.

Nadal looked to be back on track, taking the early break (2-1) in the third set,but the Russian broke back in the 6th game to make it 3-3 and again in the 10th to for a dramatic victory.

Davydenko improved to a 5-4 mark against Nadal, and his the only player to have beaten the Spaniard at least five times and hold a winning record against him.He also defeated Nadal in straight sets in the round-robin stages of the ATP Tour Finals.

Nadal’s title drought continues,ha hasn’t won a title since early May last year when he defeated Novak Djokovic on clay in Rome. However, the Mallorcan is playing better and thinks he is ready to defend his title at the Australian Open starting next Monday.
