MEN’s Singles World No 1 Roger Federer, a three-time former champion, survived a scare on his opening-round match in Melbourne against Russian Igor Andreev. Not only it was Federer’s first loss of a set in a Grand Slam first round match since the 2003 U.S. Open, but he faced three set points on Andreev’s serve at 5-6. However, Federer managed to break back, won the tiebreak and blazed through the fourth set in 28 mns for a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6, 6-0 victory. Eighth seed Robin Soderling, who last spring handed Rafael Nadal his first defeat at Roland Garros,had an even worst day as he wasn’t’ able to pull out the win.The Swede seemed to be cruising to victory with a two sets to love lead over Marcel Granollers, but the Spaniard battled back to cause the biggest upset of the men’s event so far, beating Soderling 5-7, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. Defending champion seed # 2 Rafael Nadal, #3 Novak Djokovic , # 5 Andy Murray, #6 Nikolay Davydenko and # 7 Andy Roddick won their respective first-round matches in straight sets, as well as #10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.Seed # 9 Fernando Verdasco beat Australia’s Carsten Ball in a tough four-set contest 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, 6-2. Seed # 4 Juan Martin del Potro had to go an extra one as he got upset and lost his temper on the third and dropped it.He regained his composure and defeated American Michael Russell 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Santiago Giraldo (COL) upset Spain’s Tommy Robredo,# 16 seed, in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. Former World No1 Spaniards Carlos Moya and Juan Carlos Ferrero also fell in the first round. Lleyton Hewitt,former World No1 and Australia’s best hope for a title, breezed through his opening round in a 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Brazil’s Ricardo Hocevar. WOMEN’s Singles Defending champion and seed No 1 Serena Williams (USA) advanced easily to the second round with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Urszula Radwanska from Polland. So did her sister 6-seed Venus Williams who went through her first round with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Czeck Lucie Safarova. Seed No 2 Russia’s Dinara Safina had to work harder to dismiss Magadalena Rybarikova (SVK) 6-4, 6-4. Russians Seed No 3 Svetlana Kuznetsova and No 5 Elena Dementieva won their opening round dropping only three games in their respective matches. In a battle of Russian women,Maria Kirilenko defeated Maria Sharapova in a thrilling contest 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, causing the biggest upset so far in the Australin Open Women’s Singles. All eyes are on former World No 1 Belgium’s Justin Henin, who won four straight matches since she came out of retirement, and defeafed another Belgian, Kirsten Flipkens, 6-4, 6-3 in her first-round match.
