Australian Open Henin defeats 5-seed Dementieva The much-anticipated encounter in the Women’s Singles second round Wednesday between former World No1 Justine Henin (Belgium)and Russian Elena Dementieva, who won in Sydney last week, didn’t leave any doubt concerning the form which earned Henin seven Grand Slam titles before retiring 20 months ago.

The unseeded Henin defeated 7-5, 7-6, the 5-seed Dementieva, in a quality match that should have occurred much deeper in the draw. She made a big statement, showing that she’s back at top level and is a serious contender for the title in Melbourne. Henin will face another Russian in the third round in Alisa Kleybanova, and would potentially find on her way, in the quarter-finals, long-time rival Belgium’s Kim Clijsters (who came out of retirement last summer), or 3-seed Svetlana Kuznetsova who got through her second round with an impressive 6-2,6-2.

Watch out for Henin in the Australian Open Women’s Singles.

No 2 seed Dinara Safina and No 8 Jelena Jankovic each won their second round in two easy sets.

The third-round matches to watch in the bottom of the draw, 15-seed Clijsters vs 19-seed Russian Nadia Petrova, and Jankovic vs 31-seed Alona Bondarenko (UKR).

MEN’s Singles

U.S. Open Champion,4-seed Juan Martin del Potro survived a big scare in the second round against James Blake (USA).

In the best match on the Men’s singles so far, the World No 4 defeated Blake in a dramatic five-setter 6-4, 6-7, 5-7, 6-3, 10-8, that lasted four hours and 17 minutes and saw both men call the trainer to treat leg ailments.

Del Potro finished with 205 total points to Blake’s 200, both men had 60 unforced errors and amazingly Blake had 19 more winners. But the Argentine pulled the win at the end, gaining a new legion of fans in Melbourne.

Seed No 2 Rafael Nadal, 5 Andy Murray and 7 Andy Roddick won their respective matches in straight sets.

Among thematches to follow on the third round, the contests between 12-seed Gael Monfils (FRA) vs American giant John Isner (33), 14-seed Marin Cilic (CRO) vs Swiss 19-seed Stanislas Wawrinka, and the all-Croatian duel Ivan Ljubicic vs the other giant Ivo Karlovic look most entertaining.
