Australian Open Federer’s Royal Performance

Top-seeded Swiss Roger Federer was on top form in the Australian Open’s second round when he dismissed Romanian Victor Hanescu 6-2, 6-3, 6-2, in just one hour 39 minutes.

His Royal Highness Prince Williams of Wales, who’s been touring Australia and New Zealand, watched the match from 3-0 in the third set.

“It’s a pleasure, of course, playing in front of him,” said Federer. “It was very ,I mean, a big honor that he came to watch me.”

Federer will meet Spain’s Albert Montañes (31-seed) in the third round.

On the top half of the draw, with the world No 1, 6-seed Nikolay Davidenko, Fernando Verdasco (9), Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (10) and Llleyton Hewitt (22) also cruised through their matches in straight sets.

Seed No 3 Novak Djokovic dropped the first set against Marco Chiudenilli (SUI),but took the next three easily for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3, victory. Marcos Baghdatis (CYP),runner-up at the Australian Open four years ago, made a fantastic comeback against Spain’s 17-seed David Ferrer. Baghdatis fought back from a two-set deficit and cramps late in the fifth set to defeat the Spaniard 4-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Baghdatis will face Australia’s Hewitt in one of the third-round feature matches.

Tsonga meets German 18-seed Tommy Haas who survived a tough 5-setter against Janko Tipsarevic Wednesday. A great third-round matchup.

WOMEN’s SINGLES

No 1 seed Serena Williams had no trouble getting through her second-round match, defeating Petra Kvitiova (CZE) 6-2, 6-1 ,while her sister Venus had to work a little harder in the second set to beat Austrian Sybille Bammer 6-2, 7-5.

Dane No 4 seed Caroline Wozniacki and 7-seed Victoria Azarenka won their respective contests also in straight sets.

Argentine Gisela Dulko brought the biggest upset on the top of the draw defeating 29-seed Serb Ana Ivanovic in three hard-fought sets 6-7, 7-5, 6-4.Dulko will face next Russian 9-seed Vera Zvoraneva,who won her match against Benesova 6-0,6-3.

Australia’s 13-seed Samantha Stosur will meet Italian AlbertaBrianti who surprisingly defeated Germany’s 21 -seed Sabina Lisicki in 3 sets.The Aussies will follow that match with great passion,as Stosur is their best hope for a deep run in the Women’s Singles tournament.
