| Australian Open Gonzalez thrills the crowd in 5-set win over Korolev |
Korolev always hit the ball as hard as he can on every shot, and Gonzalez has two game plans before entering his matches: the first is to hit the ball hard, and if it doesn’t work go to “plan B” which is HIT IT HARDER. The two men didn’t disappoint the fans, going at it ferociously for 5 sets. Gonzalez had to come back from a set deficit twice to level the match at 2 a piece, and took the decisive break to go up 2-1 in the fifth for a 6-7, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory. No 2 seed Rafael Nadal, 4 Juan Martin del Potro, 7 Andy Roddick and 14 Marin Cilic all won their matches in four sets to get through to the fourth round. No 5 seed Andy Murray was the only man to cruise through his third round in straight sets, defeating easily Florent Serra (FRA) 7-5, 6-1, 6-4. The six- foot- 10” Ivo Karlovic from Croatia defeated fellow countryman 24- seed Ivan Ljubicic in 4 hard-fought sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6. 33-seed six-foot- 9” American John Isner upset French 12-seed Gael Monfils with a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 win . Isner won his first ATP World Tour title last week in Oackland, and will try to reach his first Grand Slam quarterfinal when he plays Murray on Sunday. The third-round matches are completed in the Men’s Singles bottom of the draw, and we have great matchups in the round of 16. Nadal will have to deal with Karlovic booming serve, and Murray faces the other Tour’s giant John Isner. Del Potro, who lost the second set 6-0 to Mayer in his third round, will meet Marin Cilic, and Roddick, who struggled to beat Spain’s Feliciano Lopez, finds Gonzalez on his way to the quarterfinals. Women’s Singles Alona Bondarenko (UKR), and Jie Zheng (CHN) provided the Women’s third-round upsets in the bottom of the draw. Bondarenko, 31-seed, dismissed 8-seed Jelena Jankovic 6-2, 6-3, and unseeded Zheng handed a bagel to 11-seed Marion Bartoli in a 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 victory. They earned the right to face each other in the fourth round for a spot in the quarterfinals. Russian 19-seed Nadia Petrova surprisingly crushed Belgian 15-seed Kim Clijsters 6-0, 6-1, and will face 3-seed Svetlana Kuznetsova who barely survived her third-round match against 118-ranked Angelique Kerber from Germany. The Russian finally won 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, to reach the fourth round. No 2 seed Dinara Safina (RUS) had no trouble, she won 6-1, 6-2 against Elena Baltacha (GBR), and will meet other Russian Maria Kirilenko who defeated Roberta Vinci (ITA) 7-5, 7-6.
