| Federer rockets pass Tsonga to reach 22nd Grand Slam Final |
Federer will face Sunday night fifth-seeded Andy Murray, the first British player to reach the Australian Open final since John Lloyd in 1977, to try to capture his 16th Grand Slam title. The Swiss got his first break point opportunities at 15/40 in the fourth game, eventually converting on his third game point for a 3-1 lead. Federer confirmed the break quickly on his serve and maintained a three-game cushion to 5-2, when Tsonga fell to 0/40 on his serve. After saving a set point, the Frenchman missed a backhand down the line to hand the Swiss took the first set after only 30 minutes of play. Both players held serve through the first five game of the second set, until Federer broke Tsonga’s for a 4-2 lead, and then held his serve twice to close again in 30 minutes. In the third set, the Swiss broke Tsonga’s serve in the third and fifth games for a 4-1 lead and served out for the match, ending the contest in 88 minutes. Federer produced some of his best tennis with only 13 unforced errors in the match, outclassing Tsonga in a one-sided contest and avenging a loss at the hands of the Frenchman in Montreal last year. “I m very happy. In these matches you always have to deal with how your opponent plays – but sometimes they play exactly how you want.” Federer said. “I just think it’s easier with the top players if you get them in the first set. It’s nice going through like this.” The World No 1 dropped just 15 points on serve, destroying the Frenchman in a ruthless performance. Federer has won 17 matches in a row against French players at Grand Slam championships since losing to Arnaud Clement in the 2001 Australian Open third round. Tsonga attempted to become the first Frenchman to beat a World No 1 since Clement beat Agassi in the 2000 US Open second round. Maybe next time. Federer will be No 1 in the 2010 ATP Rankings for a 268th week on Monday, equaling American Jimmy Connors for third place overall in the all-time list. Murray has a 6-4 life-time record against Federer, and is the favorite to many people in that most- anticipated final. Federer, however, has defeated the Scot in their last two meetings, and today’s impressive performance will give Murray something to think about, adding to the pressure he’s under given the magnitude of the situation. 28-year-old Federer lost his last Grand Slam final, to then 20-year-old Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, at the US Open last September. He now faces the challenge of another young gun, 22-year-old Murray, who can’t wait to dethrone the Maestro and win his first Grand Slam title. It was del Potro’s time at the US Open, will it be Murray’s at the Australian Open final Sunday ? I don’t think so. Federer is my favorite to extend his record 15 Grand Slam titles to 16 with his fourth Australian Open victory.
