Djokovic has improved by one round each year he has played in Rotterdam, reaching the semi-finals on his most recent appearance in 2007. The Serb is looking to claim his first title of the season, he’s facing Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine in the first round. Nikolay Davidenko might be waiting for him in the final. The Russian is the man in form, he’s lost only one match this season, pushing Roger Federer to four sets at the Australian Open. He’ll open his campaign against always dangerous Spain’s Feliciano Lopez. Sweden’s Robin Soderling returns hoping to go one better, as he was runner-up to Michael Llodra two years ago in his last showing. The Swede battled back to beat Frenchman Florent Serra 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the first round. Russia’s Mikhail Youzny captured the title in 2007 with victory over Ivan Ljubicic, and returns to the Nederlands for a sixth visit. He’s playing a qualifier in the first round. That should be an exciting tournament, with some tough matches on the way to the final for the favorites Djokovic and Davydenko. Two Spaniards, No 1 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero and 2 Albert Montanes lead the field at the Brasil Open to start the clay season. Seed 3 Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci, runner-up to Tommy Robredo last year, will try to become the first homegrown winner since Gustavo Kurten triumphed in 2004 at Costa do Sauipe.
