Soderling captures fifth ATP World Tour title in Rotterdam Sweden’s world No 8 Robin Soderling claimed his fifth ATP World Tour title at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament Sunday, when Russian Mikhail Youzhny was forced to retire with a right hamstring injury. The third seed was leading 6-4, 6-2 when the Russian decided he couldn’t continue.

Soderling had edged No 2 seed Nikolay Davydenko 7-6, 6-4, while 20-ranked Youzhny upset world No 2 and top seed Novak Djokovic in consecutive tie-breaks 7-6. 7-6.

The Swede was contesting the Rotterdam final for the second time, he was runner-up to Michael Llodra in 2008 in a third-set tie-break. As champion, Soderling received 500 ATP ranking points and 277,000 Euros, and Youzhny, who won the tournament in 2007, 125,000 Euros and 300 points as runner-up.

“It’s a tough situation playing somebody who is injured. You have to stay focused and I think I handled it pretty well today,” said Soderling. “I really wanted to win this title since coming so close in 2008. It’s a great tournament with a great history and it is amazing to add my name to the great list of champions here.”

In the Doubles tournament, world No 2 team Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic successfully defended their title in Rotterdam 6-4, 4-6,10-7, in a thrilling contest against Simon Aspelin and Paul Hanley.

This is Canadian Nestor and Serb Zimonjic 18th title, and the second in three finals this year.

BRASIL OPEN

Former world No 1 and top seed Juan Carlos Ferrero, playing in his 30th tour-level final two days after celebrating his 30th birthday, captured his 13th title Sunday by crushing Lukasz Kubot 6-1,6-0 in Costa do Sauipe.

The Spaniard, champion of Roland Garros in 2003, demonstrated his great clay-court play, and showed that age is no obstacle as he routed 56-ranked Kubot (POL) in just one hour to claim his 10th clay-court title.

“You never expect to play a one-sided final like this,” admitted Ferrero. “One is always nervous at the beginning of a final, and it wasn’t different today. I thought I played well from the beginning and with two breaks of serve ahead quite early in the match I never looked back.”

This stellar performance marks a return to form for world No 22 Ferrero, he got $75,000 and 250 ATP Ranking points for his victory.

SAN JOSE OPEN U.S.A.

Second-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco denied American Andy Roddick a fourth SAP Open title, as he rallied from losing the opening set to defeat the top seed 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in a thrilling contest at the indoor hard-court tournament in San Jose.

Verdasco entered the final trailing Roddick 2-9 in the head-to-head series, and appeared in danger of suffering his eighth straight loss to the American. However, the Spaniard halted Roddick’s momentum early in the second set, converting on double break point to grab the 2-1 lead and saving four break points in the next game.

Both players dropped just seven points on serve in the final set, but Verdasco produced a backhand winner at 4-4 to convert the first break point, and clinched the win on the next game with a 130 mph serve past Roddick, his 15th ace of the two-hour, 11-minute match.

“I know against the Top 10 guys it’s always tough matches,” said Verdasco. “Last year in a lot of them I was really close and I didn’t win…” “Of course it’s a match that I hope will give me confidence. It was a really hard final for me, this one against Andy here, in his country, in the U.S….It’s special for me and I’m happy that I did it.”

Verdasco, who made his SAP Open debut 11 in the ATP Rankings, snapped a 15-match losing streak against Top 10 players and claimed his fourth tour-level title in 10 finals. He earned $90,925 and 250 ATP Ranking points, while runner-up World No 7 Roddick received $47,000 and 150 points.
