“Best win of my career,” said Baghdatis after stunning Federer in Indian Wells
Best win of my career, said Baghdatis after stunning Federer in Indian WellsMarcos Baghdatis saved three match points on his way to stun World No. 1 Roger Federer Tuesday night at the BNP Paribas Open. The 24-year-old Cypriot came back from a set down to oust the Swiss superstar 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 in an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 classic battle.

“Best win of my career,” said Baghdatis. “I think that says everything. I cannot say I’m not happy. I’m very happy…I lost a lot of matches against those top guys, and it’s a relief to win a match like that after being out for two years, having some tough moments. It’s a great moment for me. I’ll try to enjoy it.”

The odds were squarely in Federer’s favor entering the match. The Swiss was 6-0 lifetime against Baghdatis. Federer closed the opening set with a break, and looked like he would do the same in the second as he held two match points on Baghdatis ‘serve at 5-4. But the Cypriot won the next four points, broke the Swiss in the next game and served out the set.

Federer took a break advantage and a 4-1 lead in the third set, but Baghdatis broke back in the seventh game. Federer earned his third chance to close the match at 6-5, but sent a backhand into the net.

In the ensuing tie-break, Baghdatis got the mini-break at 4-4 on another error from Federer and won the next two points, claiming the biggest victory of his career as the Swiss was unable to return his serve on match point.

Prior to this match, the highest-ranked opponent Baghdatis had defeated was then World No. 3 Andy Roddick at the Australian Open in 2006.

2006 was also the last time Federer had failed to close out a win after holding match point (against Rafael Nadal in Rome).

Federer, who was playing in his first tournament since winning his 16-th Grand Slam title in January at the Australian Open(he suffered from a lung infection at the beginning of the month), finished the match with an uncharacteristic 46 unforced errors.

“I think as the tournament would have gone forward I would have found my grove more and more, and who knows what would have happened?” Federer said.”But I don’t have to worry about that anymore. It’s about resting because I do feel the first match in my body. It’s something that always is tough, coming from a long layover and all of a sudden playing matches. But, the season is long. There’s no need to panic here.”

The 27-seed Baghdatis got on his knees and kissed the court at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The Cypriot snapped a 6-0 all-time losing streak to the World No. 1, including the 2006 Australian Open final. He told the crowd, “Seven is my lucky number.”
