Gulbis knocked out Federer at Foro Italico in Rome
Gulbis knocked out Federer at Foro Italico in RomeWorld No. 40 Ernest Gulbis upset World No. 1 and top seed Roger Federer 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 in the second round of the Internazionali BNL D’Italia Tuesday afternoon in Rome. The 21-year-old Latvian needed seven match points over three games to knock out the Swiss superstar at the end of a dramatic third set.

I expected this matchup to be a test for Federer’s opening round in his first clay-court tournament of the season, but I never thought he would lose to the upcoming youngster. There was some serious money to be made on Gulbis, I hope some of you took the odds at BetPhoenix.com.

It took Federer just 32 minutes to clinch the first set 6-2, but Gulbis bounced back riding an excellent first serve and broke the Swiss twice in the second set -with Federer committing 15unforced errors- to take it at 6-1 and level the match.

The third set was more equal until Gulbis broke in the fifth game. At 5-3, the Latvian squandered two match points, and blew another four on his serve at 5-4 - including two double-faults -, losing the game on Federer’s first advantage. The Swiss, however, couldn’t hold serve on the 11th game and Gulbis made good of his seventh opportunity to close the match, at love, on his serve.

This is the biggest of Gulbis’ five Top 10 career wins: “It feels great! I was shocked after the match. It’s a great feeling—that’s all I can say. I don’t have a word for it in English. It’s…indescribable.”

It is the first time since 2002 that Federer has lost before the quarter-finals in three straight ATP World Tour tournaments, and the first time since the 2000 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters in his first clay-court match of the season.

“I hope I can bounce back, it’s usually what I do after something like this,” Federer said. “Sometimes it takes a loss to shake your mind through. When you lose, you understand how difficult it is to dominate this tour.”

Gulbis was impressive on serve, losing only three points in the third set until the nerves started showing in the 10th game.

“Well, actually I was shi…my pants –sorry for the language, but that’s the only way I can describe how I felt at 5-4 and at match point,” said Gulbis. “I couldn’t get the serve in, I didn’t know what to do, I was shaking. A terrible feeling.”

No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic and 4-seed andy Murray both cruised to the third round in straight sets. Three-seeded and defending champion Rafael Nadal faces Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany in his opening round on Wednesday.
