05_federer_is_looking_for_esroril_title.jpgWorld No. 1 Roger Federer entered the Estoril Open in Portugal as the only Top-10 player in the field. The Swiss superstar is looking to bounce back after losing to Ernest Gulbis in his opening round at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome.

Although Federer hasn’t won a clay-court match yet this season, it will be hazardous to bet against him this week. “I felt good going into Rome, but after one match and intense practice I’m looking forward to the week ahead,” said Federer. “For sure I would like to win the tournament again. As the only Top 10 player in the draw, I have high expectations. But first of all I’d like to record my first win on clay after losing to Gulbis last week.”

Federer won the Estoril Open in 2008, and is preparing for Roland Garros and Wimbledon lurking in the horizon.

“We’ll see how tricky it is to defend my titles. I know my game, my mind and my body are good enough. The next weeks will be interesting, not crucial, to see where my level is at.”

The world No. 1 has a tough task ahead of him, with Rafael Nadal back to his best level. The Spaniard won the first two clay-court ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Monaco and Rome in a three weeks span, and looks like he’s ready to regain the French Open title at Roland Garros. “Rafa” suffered his first lost at the clay-court French Open last year against Robin Soderling, after winning four straight titles.

In 2008, Nadal defeated Federer in both Roland Garros and Wimbledon finals, taking the No. 1 spot from the Swiss.

Federer has a 13-4 match record this season, he’ll try to capture his 63rd career title at the Estoril open.

In Serbia, Novak Djokovic returns to defend the title he won on his inaugural edition last year, in his home town of Belgrade. Americans John Isner and Sam Querrey, along with Swiss No. 2 Stanislas Wawrinka wil be his strongest challengers.

Marin Cilic headlines the BMW Open field in Munich. The World No. 11 Croat reached the quarter-finals in his previous two appearances (2008-09), but is still looking for his first ATP World Tour clay-court final. Mikhail Youzhny from Russia (2009 runner-up) and defending champion Tomas Berdych will be on his way.
