| Nadal captures record 18th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title in Madrid |
Watched by Queen Sofia of Spain, the 23-year-old defeated World No. 1 Roger Federer 6-4, 7-5 at the Caja Magica, taking revenge from the Swiss who beat him last year also in straight sets. Rafa also became the first player to win all three ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay court tournaments in the same season – he won the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters and the Internazionali BNL d’ Italia last month. “Well, to be the first player to win all three is unbelievable,” said Nadal. “I would never have dreamed that I would be able to do so. I’m very happy to have won here and it is especially important to have won in Madrid.” The “King of clay” is back to his best, and anybody would be foolish to bet against him on the European red dirt. Unforced errors were coming from both sides, leading to breaks of serves in the third and fourth games, before Rafa broke decisively in the seventh helped by Roger’s mistakes. The Spaniard saved four break points as he served out the set. The second set was played at a much higher level, the two men bringing out the best from each other. They reached the tiebreak after exchanging breaks of serve in the 5th and 6th games, and the turning point came when a Federer’s drop shot got the tape - Nadal had given up- when he was 4-2 up. Soon the Swiss found himself two match points down and saved the first one, but couldn’t deny Nadal on the second. The Mallorcan claimed the Championship after 2 hours and 10 minutes of a very entertaining contest. “Neither of us played a perfect match, we both made mistakes,” said Nadal. “At times we did play well but I think we know each other so much that we are only focusing on how to make each other play worse…It was a very exciting match, a very level match, as is usually the case, and playing against Roger is a very special experience and quite an honor.” The 28-year-old Federer was looking to draw level with Nadal and Andre Agassi by winning his 17th ATP World Tour Masters 100 title. The Swiss is 19-6 on the season and hasn’t won a title since capturing his record 16th Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January. “Considering where I was last week ( he lost to Albert Montanes in the Estoril semi-final, after losing on his opening round to Ernest Gulbis in Rome the week before) this has been a major improvement for me,” said Federer. “The fact is I hardly play a lefty on clay and nobody as tough as Rafa. So it’s obviously not easy to make that transition and I thought I did it very well today… I was maybe a couple of points away here and there, but just got broken one too many times today…I’ve played great this week so I definitely come out of this tournament with tons of confidence.” It really came down to that, a couple of unforced errors here and there, and this match allows us to think that Rafa is not unbeatable on clay. However, with 28 clay-court titles, Nadal moves into a tie for fifth place with Ivan Lendl and Ilie Nastase in the Open Era clay-court titles leaders. Guillermo Vilas holds the record with 45 titles. The Spaniard received 1000 2010 ATP Ranking points, and was already assured of returning to the N0. 2 ranking by reaching the final in Madrid, pushing Novak Djokovic to No. 3. This very closely contested final at the Caja Magica in Madrid holds great promises for the second major tournament of the year, the French Open in Paris (May 23). The players are battling this week in Dusseldorf, Germany, and Nice, France, in the last clay-court preparations before Roland Garros.
