Serena Williams marches on at Roland Garros, sister Venus outNo. 1 seed Serena Williams dismissed Shahar Peer from Israel 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 16 in Paris to reach the quarter-finals of the French Open.

Everybody expected a clash between the world No. 1 and four-time champion Justine Henin in the quarter-finals, as an advance final of the event, but the Belgium lost to Australia’s seed No. 7 Samantha Stosur in three sets 6-2, 1-6, 4-6.

The American seems to be on her way to capture her second title in Roland Garros, a tournament she won in 2002. Her sister, No. 2 seed Venus Williams doesn’t look comfortable on Paris red clay, losing in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to 19-seed Nadia Petrova from Russia. It’s the fourth straight year that Venus fails to reach the QFs in Paris.

No. 19 seed Nadia Petrova and No. 5 seed Elena Dementieva will battle for a spot in the semi-finals in an all-Russian duel. Dementieva is the highest ranked in this contest, but Petrova has been playing superb tennis so far. A tough one to pick a winner.

No. 4 seed Jelena Jankovic from Serbia is in good position to reach the semi-finals, as she faces the last unseeded player left in the draw, Yaroslava Shvedova (KAZ).

No. 3 seed Caroline Wozniacki will try to take down 17-seed Francesca Schiavone, the second Italian she faces after beating Flavia Penneta in a hard three-setter in the previous round. The Dane should go through, but it won’t be easy.
