Samantha Stosur and Francesca Schiavone reach first Grand Slam final in Paris
Samantha Stosur and Francesca Schiavone reach first Grand Slam final in ParisIn the first Women’s Singles semi-final of the French Open on Wednesday, No. 17 seed Francesca Schiavone from Italy got through to the final when No. 5 seed Elena Dementieva surprisingly retired at the end of the first set.

The Italian had won the opening set 7-6 when the Russian waked to her and shook her hand, giving Schiavone a pass to the final.

Schiavone, a shocked expression on her face, took some time to realize that she had reached the last stage of the tournament at Roland Garros. She continues to make history for Italy in Paris, after being the first Italian female player to make it to a Grand Slam semi-finals.

Australia’s Samantha Stosur, after eliminating Justine Henin in the fourth round and World No. 1 Serena Williams in the quarter-finals, dismissed No. 4 seed Jelena Jankovic from Serbia in two quick sets 6-1, 6-2. The Australian also reaches a Grand Slam Final for the first time.

Nobody would have anticipated that those two women would be fighting for the title in Roland Garros. It will be a fun match to watch, as it will make a refreshing change from the heavy-hitters matchups we’re used to.

Stosur and Schiavone use a variety of shots, constructing finesse points instead of pounding on the ball from the backcourt like the Russian players and the Williams sisters.

However, Stosur has a little more power, I think she’ll continue to dominate and beat Schiavone to win her first Grand Slam title.

In the Women’s Doubles final, No.1 seeds Venus and Serena Williams (USA) defeated No. 12 seeds Kveta Peschke (CZE) and Katarina Srebotnik 6-2, 6-3 to claim their second title at Roland Garros (won in 1999), and their second Grand Slam doubles title this year following their victory at the Australian Open last January.
