The St. Louis Cardinals are in a fierce battle with the Cincinnati Reds for the National League Central crown, and the two teams have long ago left the rest of the division in the dust. The neck and neck race will make every series crucial for both teams down the stretch, and that’s definitely the case for the Cards who’ll welcome the Chicago Cubs to the ‘Gateway City’ for a three game weekend series. The Cubs are just playing out the string at this point sitting in fourth place in the division sixteen games behind the leaders.

The final major golf tournament of the year takes place this weekend as the PGA Championship is contested at Wisconsin’s Whistling Straits. The defending champion is Y.E. Yang of South Korea, who became the first Asian-born player to win a major with his victory at Minnesota's Hazeltine National Golf Club in 2009. The PGA Tournament was first held in 1916 at the Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, N.Y and rotates among different courses throughout the United States. It began as a match-play tournament, but long ago transitioned to the more popular stroke-play event. Walter Hagen and Jack Nicklaus hold the record for most PGA Championship titles, with five each, while Tiger Woods has won four times.

Jose Mourinho has yet to coach his first game for Real Madrid, yet he’s already been discussing his next job. Mourinho recently suggested in an interview with the American media that he’d be interested in leading the US National Soccer team. At the time of the interview, Bob Bradley was still firmly entrenched as US team coach but despite recent news that he’s possibly in line for the managerial job at Aston Villa obviously Mourinho isn’t looking to make the move now. Still, the ‘Special One’ made clear that the idea of winding up his career in America was very enticing.

In 2009 Don Wakamatsu made history as the first Japanese-American manager of a Major League Baseball team in history. He now has the dubious distinction of the being the first Japanese-American manager fired in baseball history. On Monday, Wakamatsu was dismissed as the manager of the Seattle Mariners becoming the fifth MLB skipper shown the door this season (Baltimore's Dave Trembley, Kansas City's Trey Hillman, Arizona's A.J. Hinch and Florida's Fredi Gonzalez were the others). At 42-70, the Mariners are off to one of the worst starts in franchise history and mired in last place in the American League West.

Following a dominant victory in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth this past weekend every expectation was that he’d next run at the Travers Stakes in late August. Although trainer Bob Baffert at the time said that hadn’t been decided, the August 28 race at Saratoga was the obvious choice. Early this week, however, Lookin At Lucky’s team received some bad news—he’d come down with a minor illness and wouldn’t be able to recover in time for the late August date.

The Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks have shaken up their goaltending ranks, cutting ties with last year’s starter Antti Neimi and signing free agent Marty Turco. The moves come after an arbitrator made a $2.75 million judgment in Neimi’s favor on Saturday. The Blackhawks had 48 hours to accept the judgment, trade him or let him become an unrestricted free agent and chose to the latter option. Neimi is now a free agent, while Turco signed a one year deal for $1.2 million to replace him as the Blackhawks’ starting goaltender.

Earlier this year, the University of Arizona announced a number of ‘self sanctions’ related to NCAA violations committed by Hall of Fame basketball coach Lute Olson. Late in the week, the NCAA added their own punishment to that resulting in Arizona having to vacate 18 wins from the 2007-2008 basketball season. In addition the school has been placed on two years’ probation starting from last Tuesday instead of February when the ‘self sanctions’ were announced.
