The Williams sisters went through their first round in straight sets but it was not as easy as the scores would indicate.However they passed the test and got a good feel of the Wimbledon grass. # 1 seeded Dinara Safina also won in 2 sets against # 72 Dominguez Lino but was never convincing.Safina has never felt comfortable on grass and never passed the 3rd round in The Championships. # 4 Elena Dementeva breezed through her match against lellow Russian Kudryatseva 6-4,6-1 while # 5 Svetlana Kuznetsova,Roland Garros Champion,suffured to beat the Japanese Morigami 6-3,7-6 as did # 6 Jelena Jankovic to win 6-4,7-6. # 7 Svoraneva needed 3 sets to eliminate the #1 British player Georgie Stoop,as did Ana Ivanovic witth Hradecka(8-6 in the 3rd) and the 2006 Champion now seeded # 17 Amelie Mauresmo. # 10 Nadia Petrova dominated Yakimova 6-1,6-1 but the score of the first round was posted by Marion Bartoli who inflicted a 6-0,6-0 to Taipei’s Chan.

As the top seeded managed to get through their first matches many failed todo so:21 Shneider,22 Cornet,23 Wozniak,25 Kanepi,29 Banner, 30 Szavay and 32 Chakvetadze. All eyes were on the former Champion (2004) from Russia Maria Sharapova seeded 24. She defeated Kutusova 7-5,6-4.

None of the faverites seem to be facing dangerous opponents in the second round,so you could make some money betting on them.
