The last official day of play of the first week at Wimbledon went on under blue skies until late in the evening.It seems that the new roof on Central Court has scared away the usual loosy english weather as it has never been necessary to close it down.

Men’s Singles

In the 2 matches postponned Friday evening, # 29 Igor Andreev defeated Andreas Seppi 6-1,7-6,4-6, 7-6 and # 24 Tommy Haas got a spot in the 4th round in a marathon match against #11,twenty years old Marin Cilic 7-5,7-5,1-6,6-7,10-8.Haas and Andreev will face each other next.

# 20 Tomas Berdych beat badly # 12 Nikolay Davidenko 6-2,6-3,6-2,his first victory over the russian after 8 consecutive losses.

# 23 Radek Stepanek,after winning the first 2 sets 7-5,7-5, lost the 3rd and 4th 6-3,6-4 to David ferrer and closed the match 6-4 in the 5th .

Lleyton Hewitt keeps marching through the draw defeating Philipp Petzschner in straight sets 7-5,7-6,6-3.His next opponent Stepanek seems very accessible so the 46 ranked aussie is looking for renewed glory in his career.

# 6 Andy Roddick won in 4 sets 7-6,7-6,4-6,6-3 against Jurgen Melzer in a very entertaining match.Roddick will face Tomas Berdych next.

# 8 Gilles Simon went through in 3 sets 6-2,7-5,6-2 over # 31 Victor Hanescu.

#19 Stanislas Wawrinka lost the first set 5-7 to Jesse Levine and won the next three 7-5,6-3,6-3 to get to the 4th round.

The british fans’ favorite # 3 Andy Murray defeated Viktor Troicki in 3 quick sets 6-2,6-3,6-4 to end his first week of play.He looked impressive and could very well get to the Final for the expected match up with Federer but it is a long way away. Andy’s next rival is the swiss Wawrinka. A great match between # 10 Fernando Gonzalez and former # 1 of the world Juan Carlos Guerrero which kept all the fans on their seats until almost 9pm.Guerrero would upset Gonzalez in 5 sets 4-6,7-5,6-4,4-6,6-4.Standing ovation as players left the court.Guerrero will face Simon in the 4th round.

Ladies’ Singles

# 13 Ana Ivanovic had a very convincing win 7-5,6-2 over # 18 Samantha Stosur.Ivanovic,after a shaky start in her first match of the Tournament,is showing great form; she is a real threat for the top players.

# 3 Venus Williams defeated Suarez Navarro 6-0,6-4. Venus,in pursuit of her third straight title,6th total,at Wimbledon will face Ivanovic on the round of 16.A good time to bet your favorite at BetPhoenix Sportsbook.

 

# 9 Caroline Wozniacki keeps impressing everybody eliminating #20 Medina Garrigues 6-2,6-2.

The 17 years old american Melanie Oudin brought up the biggest upset of the Ladies Championship taking down #6 seeded Jelena Jankovic in 3 very physical sets 6-7,7-5,6-2.The fans have found their Cinderella as they were firmly behind Oudin during the match.

# 17 Amelie Mauresmo won in straight sets against Flavia Pennetta, 7-5,6-3.

#1 Dinara Safina defeated Kirsten Flipkens 7-5,6-1.She will face Mauresmo next.

AN EVEN BIGGER UPSET as 19 years old Sabine Lisicki from Germany defeated 6-2,7-5 Svetlana Kuznetsova, recent Champion in Roland Garros and one of the favorites here in Wimbledon.18 years old # 9 Wozniacki is her opponent in the 4th round in what will be a great battle of future stars.

# 11 Agnieszka Rawdaska took out China’s Na Li 6-4,7-5,her next opponent is the youngster A. Oudin.
