Ok sports betting fans, let's face it, Week 12's Monday Night Football matchup between two 4-7 SU clubs won't trump Thursday and Sunday's great online NFL betting action. But when the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans take the field the opportunity to make money presents itself. Any way you shake it, NFL wagering will available and it's Monday Night Football baby! So let's preview the game and key trends in efforts of ending the NFL's week on a winning note.
The Jags have lost four of five games in Houston after winning their first game there against the expansion Texans in 2002. BetPhoenix.com NFL odds list Houston the 3-point favorites with a game total of 48½. The Texans have covered the spread in four of the five meetings in the series overall and five of six played in Houston. Despite the Texans' ATS profitable record versus Jacksonville, the line favors the Jags as the dog has barked in six of the last eight matchups between the two.
Last season, Jacksonville won 11 games and defeated Pittsburgh in a wild-card game before being ousted from the playoffs with a loss to New England in the divisional game. It was the team's deepest playoff run since advancing to the AFC championship game in 1999.
Houston made its own strides in 2007, finishing 8-8 for the first non-losing record in the franchise's six seasons. The young Texans appeared to be turning the corner and earned the first Monday night appearance in franchise history, but Houston has regressed this season.
During preseason, based on both club's success last year, this was a MNF matchup circled on many online NFL wagering fan's calendars. But instead of this being a game with playoff implications, the Jags and Texans square off in Houston, where the Texans are 1-4 ATS, in an anticlimactic meeting between teams tied for last place in the AFC South. The Jags are 1-4 ATS in their last five games AFC South foes.
Jacksonville is in serious danger of missing the playoffs with their first losing record since 2003, following their fourth lost in five games last Sunday, turning the ball over five times, allowing four sacks, missing two field goals, dropping a touchdown pass and getting flagged eight times in a 30-12 loss to Minnesota, its fourth straight defeat at home, where they've yet to cover all season at 0-6 ATS.
If you bet on NFL and looking for statistical support to invest in the Jags, last week's outcome may help because Jacksonville is 14-5-1 ATS in their last 20 games after scoring less than 15 points in their previous outing. But on the flip side, the Jags are 2-5 ATS in their last seven contests following a SU loss of more than 14 points. Also note if your thinking Jags, they are a strong 11-1 ATS in the last 12 played in Week 13 and 4-1 ATS in their last five December games.
The Jags hope to rebound against the Texans, who snapped a three-game losing streak with a 16-6 road win over Cleveland last Sunday. Houston quarterback Sage Rosenfels, a career backup, had his best game since replacing injured Matt Schaub three weeks ago. Though his problems controlling the ball continued with two second-half interceptions, he completed 24 of 32 passes for 275 yards and a 17-yard TD pass to Kevin Walter in the first quarter. He connected with Andre Johnson 10 times for 116 yards.
Rosenfels' showing last week was impressive, but unfortunately for Texan backers, Houston is 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games after accumulating more than 250 yards passing in their previous game. They are 11-23 ATS in their last 34 games following a SU win.
