Week 14 online NCAA betting action was immeasurable and provided a much clearer BCS picture. It was Rivalry Week, and if you bet on college football, it lived up to its expectations and then some. Let's reflect back at the BCS contests, how things stack up in the Top 10 in the newly released rankings and where BCS teams may go bowling.
No. 1 Alabama (12-0 SU, 9-3 ATS) owned the simplest of all scenarios heading into Saturday's play: Down Auburn and beat Florida next week in the SEC championship game and they'd be headed to Miami for Jan. 8's BCS title game. Many thought the Crimson Tide's home game against rival Auburn in Saturday's annual Iron Bowl was a potential trap game if Alabama got caught looking ahead to the SEC title game versus the Gators. But the Tide were focused on its business at hand and posted a 36-0 victory over Auburn, ending a Tiger's six-game SU winning streak against them by the biggest margin in 46 years, while showing the football wagering community why they're ranked supreme. The Tide closed out the campaign with a 6-2 ATS conference record. The loss left Auburn with no shot at a bowl game for the first time in nine years and they ended the season on a money-shredding 1-9 ATS run overall. No. 2 Oklahoma (11-1 SU, 9-2 ATS) made a bold enough BCS statement, outscoring then-No. 12 Oklahoma State 61-41 Saturday evening in the highest-scoring Bedlam rivalry game in the century-old series, to leapfrog previously second-ranked Texas. The Sooners closed the season at 7-1 in Big 12 play and covered its last five straight conference meetings, due-in-part to the Heisman-caliber arm of Sam Bradford, who finished 30-of-44 for 370 yards, four touchdowns passing and one rushing en rout to lowering the Cowboys to No. 14. It was Oklahoma's fourth straight 60-point plus game, accounting for covers in each. The Sooners ended the season at 6-0 ATS in their last six consecutive road games. The win secured a return trip to Arrowhead Stadium for next week's Big 12 title game against North champion No. 20 Missouri, who dropped seven spots after getting upset at home 40-37 at the hands of its border rival Kansas. The Big 12 had to use its fifth tiebreaker, best BCS rating, to determine Missouri's conference title game opponent next week and inside track to the national title game. The Sooners, who lost to Texas 45-35 in October, barely edged the Longhorns. Oklahoma has a .9351 BCS average. Texas' BCS average is .9223. No. 3 Texas (11-1 SU, 9-3 ATS) routed Texas A&M 49-9 last Thursday with style points that resulted in the largest margin of victory in the rivalry since a 48-0 Texas win way back in 1898, but it wasn't enough for the Longhorns to retain its No. 2 ranking. However, fans in Austin still have a shot at watching its team play in the BCS title game. The winner of the SEC championship game is virtually guaranteed a spot in Miami on Jan. 8. The Sooners will claim the other spot by beating Missouri, though an Oklahoma loss, could allow Texas to slide into the national title game, despite not playing for its conference championship. The Longhorns concluded its regular season by covering in just two of its last five game. No. 4 Florida's (11-1 SU, 9-2 ATS) Tim Tebow threw three touchdown passes, ran for 80 yards and another score, and the Gators devoured then-No. 20 Florida State 45-15 in sloppy conditions Saturday. It was the most points Florida has ever scored on the road against the Seminoles. Florida extended its SU winning streak to eight games, going 7-0 ATS during the winning span (no line on Week 13 vs. Citadel), heading into next week's colossal showdown with Alabama in Atlanta, where the Gators would secure a spot in the national title game with a win. Florida State, who fell to No. 24 in the romp, will likely have to settle for a spot in the Gator Bowl against Nebraska. No. 5 USC (10-1 SU, 6-5 ATS) ran it up 38-5 versus Notre Dame. By winning their eighth straight game, the Trojans kept their slim national championship hopes alive and, at the very least, are likely to appear in their fourth straight Rose Bowl game. If pollsters are hesitant about letting a team that didn't win its conference play for a national title, maybe USC could get a shot at the SEC champion, though, not likely. The Trojans have one game to go at rival UCLA next week. With then-No. 17 Oregon State's 65-38 loss to No. 19 Oregon, if USC beats cross-town rival UCLA at the Rose Bowl to win its seventh straight conference title it would set up a New Year's date in Pasadena with No. 8 Penn State (11-1 SU, 7-3-1 ATS), the Big Ten champion. No. 6 Utah (12-0 SU, 7-3-1 ATS) held its spot in this week's standings while idle. The Utes won the MWC title last week and wrapped up their second perfect regular season in five years after handling rival BYU, 48-24. The victory over the Cougars essentially assures Utah an automatic berth in a BCS game sometime in January. The Utes are the highest-ranked non-"Big Six" team in the standings. A non-"Big Six" team is guaranteed a BCS spot in two ways. One is if it finishes in the top 12; the other is if it is ranked in the top 16 and its ranking is higher than that of a conference champion that has an automatic berth. The highest-ranked Big East team is Cincinnati, at 13th. The highest-ranked ACC team is Georgia Tech, at 15th. No. 7 Texas Tech (11-1 SU, 5-4-1 ATS) is seventh in the standings after escaping with a 35-25 against Baylor. Graham Harrell capped a 21-point rally for Texas Tech with a touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter for the win. Texas Tech won 11 games in a season for the third time in the program's 84 years. But if things don't fall right, the Red Raiders reward could be nothing more than a Cotton Bowl bid, left out of the BCS in favor of the Longhorns and Sooners. Baylor nearly pulled the upset but fell short after giving Texas Tech all it could handle, but the Bears have now has lost 32 consecutive games against Top 10 teams since a 20-13 win at Southern California on Sept. 21, 1985. No. 9 Boise State (12-0 SU, 7-3-1 ATS) remained unbeaten by blowing out rival Fresno State, 61-10. Ian Johnson ran for 128 yards and scored two touchdowns as scouts from three BCS bowls watched. The senior tied the WAC record of 57 rushing touchdowns set by Marshall Faulk at San Diego State from 1991-93. The Broncos have proven over resent years they have little problems cashing against clubs at .500 or better, having closed its regular season at 32-12-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record. There were reps from several bowls at the game, but ninth ranked Boise State is likely to appear in the Poinsettia Bowl possibly. No. 10 Ohio State (10-2 SU, 5-6 ATS) is the highest two-loss team in the BCS standings and are candidates to play in the Fiesta, Sugar or Orange. As it stands today, it seems likely that eight of the Top 10 teams in the BCS will be in BCS bowls – all but Texas Tech and Boise State. No conference can have more than two teams picked for the BCS bowls. (Sorry, Texas Tech). Only the top ranked Mid-major team will earn an automatic bid. (Sorry, Boise St.). Cincinnati is guaranteed a BCS bid, and No. 17 Boston College meets No. 25 Virginia Tech for the ACC title and that league's automatic BCS bid. No. 25 Virginia Tech moved in the standings and Oregon State fell out. The final at-large spot to be announced Dec. 7.
